Doctoral Dissertations

Medication errors are a leading cause of death in the United States. Electronic Health Records (EHR) along with Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) are considered promising ways to reduce these errors. However, EHR systems have not eliminated medication errors. The Process By Which Physicians Extract Information From Electronic Progress Notes During Handoffs, Brian D. Amster

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

A handoff requires that the responsibility for patient patient’s care is transferred from one healthcare professional to another. The goals of this research were to identify, evaluate, and use analytical methods to describe how physicians (n=10) extracted information from electronic progress notes, one important source of information used during handoffs.
