Characterization Of The Acquisition Parameters Of A Submersible Gamma-Ray Computed Tomography System, Zhongmin Jin Jan 2024

Characterization Of The Acquisition Parameters Of A Submersible Gamma-Ray Computed Tomography System, Zhongmin Jin

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this work is to study a component of a submersible gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) system used in the non-destructive testing of irradiated nuclear fuels. The first section of this study proposes two acceleration approaches for rapidly modeling a transmission-type gamma-ray tomography system. The first relies on Monte Carlo simulations with a monodirectionally biased source sampled from a sub-volume of the whole source volume. This method estimates the real count rate using analytical correction factors. The second way of acceleration is based on deterministic calculations that use the Beer-Lambert law and detector response characteristics. It shows that both …

Verficiation And Validation Of Unstructured Meshing Capabilities In Mcnp6, Micah C. Jeroutek Mar 2022

Verficiation And Validation Of Unstructured Meshing Capabilities In Mcnp6, Micah C. Jeroutek

Theses and Dissertations

Discrepancies were found between the legacy CSGs and the new UMs with the latter's introduction in MCNP6. As such, V&V of UMs in MCNP must be conducted to assist in their further development and increase user confidence in them. Currently, the MCNP test suite is lacking in UM benchmarks, and of the few that are present, their range in problem type is limited. To address these issues, two preliminary test cases covering new applications of UMs were developed for future inclusion in the test suite. The first was for the Athena-I experiment which involved the study of electronic devices' responses …

Verification And Validation Of Radiation Protection Factors From Monte Carlo Simulations, William J. Erwin Sep 2021

Verification And Validation Of Radiation Protection Factors From Monte Carlo Simulations, William J. Erwin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the verification and validation of methods for producing radiation protection factors (RPFs) using experiments and Monte Carlo N-Particle 6 (MCNP6) simulations. RPF validation of a steel enclosure using a plutonium-beryllium source produced a validated RPF with statistically significant agreement between neutron MCNP6 models and experiments and a gamma protection factor (GPF) with statistically significant agreement to the measured GPF. Efforts to validate more complex enclosures using the Fast Burst Reactor (FBR) yielded the first-ever direct measurements of this reactor’s prompt gamma emission spectrum and revealed irreconcilable differences between the FBR facility-provided source spectrum and spectrometer measurements, resulting …

Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations were used to calculate the positron stopping profiles in tungsten positron moderator foils. Stopping profiles were numerically integrated with efficiency kernels derived from Green's function solutions of the 3D diffusion equation to determine the moderation efficiency in both the backscattering and transmission geometries. Stopping profiles and efficiencies were calculated for positron energies from 10 keV to 10 MeV and incident angles from 0° to 75°. The resulting efficiencies agreed with other calculated and measured values in the literature, especially when similar values of the positron diffusion length and surface emission branching ratio were used. Large …
