The purpose of this research is to improve the ability to image Special Nuclear Material (SNM) using a High Purity Germanium Double Sided Strip Detector (HPGeDSSD) for use in the field of nuclear nonproliferation. When used for gamma spectrometry, HPGe detectors can efficiently distinguish various isotopes because of their good energy resolution. The detector used for this research is a liquid nitrogen cooled germanium detector with five charge collection strips on each face. Current operational needs require the deployment of radiation detection equipment with the ability to accurately and reliably identify special nuclear materials and their byproducts without dependence on cryogenics. This requires a resolution of 0.5% or less over a range of 200 to 700 keV. The feasibility of a Compton spectrometer to achieve this resolution is examined. The Compton spectrometer system used consists of two detectors. The Compton scatter event occurs in a CdTe detector where the Compton electron energy is collected. The goal of this thesis was to construct and test a neutron detector to measure the energy spectrum of 1 to 14-MeV neutrons in the presence of gammas. A spectrometer based on the process of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) was constructed, in which the scintillator NE-213 was used. The primary neutron/ gamma sources used were 78-mCi and 4.7-Ci 239PuBe sources, while 4.7-µCi and 97.6-µCi 22Na gamma sources were used for energy calibration and additional testing of the detector. Proton recoil spectra and Compton electron spectra were unfolded with the neutron and gamma unfolding code FORIST to generate the …
