Identification Of Strong Tremor Causes For Appropriate Rock Burst Prevention In A Hard Coal Mine, Rafał Pakosz, Łukasz Wojtecki, Maciej J. Mendecki, Agnieszka Krzyżanowska

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The exploitation carried out in the Bielszowice part of the Ruda Hard Coal Mine is mainly accompanied by seismic and rock burst hazards. The occurrence of high-energy tremors may be associated with many factors, e.g., fracturing of thick layers of high-strength rocks or destruction processes of a stressed and/or thick coal seam. These factors are often combined when excavating a single longwall panel. Determining the causes of strong tremors is of fundamental importance for mining and rock burst prevention. The extraction of the 004z longwall panel in the top layer of coal seam No. 504 was designed in complex geological …

Influence Of Cutting Parameters On The Performance Of Plough During Hard Rock Cutting In Coal Mining, Sathish Kumar Palaniappan, Moganapriya Chinnasamy, Samir Kumar Pal, Rajasekar Rathanasamy

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Coal ploughs have proved very successful on many faces in various parts of the world. Recently, there has been a general tendency in longwall working to increase the speed at which the machine progresses along the coal face. An increase in production rate demands enhances either due to depth of penetration or cutting speed. This, in turn, results in increasing power demand and also the force acting on an individual pick. To get maximum efficiency from a cutting machine, a number of parameters need to be investigated. The first and foremost thing of interest is naturally the pick geometry. The …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of The Effect Of Integration Of A Flooded-Bed Scrubber Into A Longwall Shearer On Airflow Along A Coal Mine Longwall Face, Sampurna Arya, Thomas Novak, Joseph Sottile

Mining Engineering Faculty Publications

Dust control is one of the most difficult challenges for underground coal mine operators, especially longwall mine operators. The most widely used dust control technologies at a longwall section are ventilation air and water sprays, whereas a continuous miner section has the added advantage of having a dust scrubber built into the continuous miner. To test the potential benefits of integrating a flooded-bed scrubber into a longwall shearer, the authors designed and built a dust scrubber system for a full-scale mock-up of a longwall shearer. The mock-up was installed in the longwall test gallery at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) …

Evaluation Of The 20 L Dust Explosibility Testing Chamber And Comparison To A Modified 38 L Vessel For Underground Coal, Robert Quentin Eades, Kyle A. Perry, Catherine E. Johnson, Jacob Miller

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The phenomenon of combustible dust explosions is present within many industries. Tests for explosibility of dust clouds per ASTM E1226 use a 20 L explosive chamber that places the combustible dust directly below the dispersion nozzle which generates a thorough mixture for testing purposes. However, in the underground coal mining industry, there are a number of geologic, mining, and regulatory factors that change the deposition scheme of combustible coal dust. This causes the atmosphere of a coal mine to have a variable rock dust-coal dust mixture at the time of ignition. To investigate the impact of this variable atmosphere, a …
