The All-In Sustaining Cost (AISC) was introduced in 2013 to better capture the cost of producing one ounce of gold and, when compared with the gold price and grade, could describe a company’s gold production efficiency. Generating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) from gold chloride solution by precipitating with compounds can be difficult due to the potentially required high temperatures. Tin chloride can be used to overcome this dilemma. The process that is known to make Purple of Cassius is a method where gold chloride and tin chloride solutions are mixed to form AuNPs and tin oxide precipitate. However, it is modified by adding hydrazine to resolubilize the tin oxide and provide a more stable solution for the AuNPs. It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. Mine waste rock is often recycled for paste and cement backfill in underground cut and fill mining operations. Aggregate in concrete and road surfacing material is another use if the mine waste does not contain deleterious materials that can degrade surface and ground water quality where it is used. Shotcrete usage in mining has been primarily limited to packaged dry mixes from offsite manufacturers. The project discussed in this thesis is part of a larger project developing trees that can tolerate and withstand heavy metals and acidic soils from historic mining operations in Butte Montana as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project involved growing tree seedlings native to Butte, Montana and planting them on degraded mine soils, tailings, and processing wastes (mine waste) located within the Butte Priority Soil Operable Unit (BPSOU). There are several stages within mine planning that utilize different block models to help predict future values. Ore reconciliation manages the variance observed between the forecasted values from these block models and actual production data. This paper primarily focuses on an ore reconciliation system that was developed for an open pit copper operation located in the Western United States. A monthly reconciliation approach has been setup in a stepwise format along the mine value chain. This project explored the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. This project analyzed the efficiency of incorporating the use of directional drilling technology into coal overburden blasting. Directional drilling is currently in use in the petroleum industry and it is believed that it will be a valuable asset in the mining industry. This project has shown that directional drilling can be a viable technology for use in the coal overburden removal process resulting in increased drill utilization and potential for cost savings. Future work regarding blasting and geotechnical evaluation should be performed to solidify the concept.

The health effects associated with diesel exhaust exposure have been documented for decades. However, methods used to assess diesel exhaust have experienced considerable revision over the past twenty years. The latest sampling methodology considers particulate matter elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) analysis along with the vapor phase OC analysis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of vapor phase OC on the current National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method 5040 sampling and evaluation techniques for diesel exhaust particulate matter.

Development of deeper and more complex orebodies has increased the demand for efficient use of the air ventilating underground mining operations. Deeper and heavily mechanized operations present increasing difficulty for maintaining the air temperatures encountered by personnel, which must be removed to ensure their safety and health. The efficient use of air is made possible by the implementation of Ventilation-on-Request (VOR) systems.
