A Novel Method Characterizing The Impact Response Of Functionally Graded Plates, Reid A. Larson Sep 2008

A Novel Method Characterizing The Impact Response Of Functionally Graded Plates, Reid A. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Functionally graded material (FGM) plates are advanced composites with properties that vary continuously through the thickness of the plate. Metal-ceramic FGM plates have been proposed for use in thermal protection systems where a metal-rich interior surface of the plate gradually transitions to a ceramic-rich exterior surface of the plate. The ability of FGMs to resist impact loads must be demonstrated before using them in high-temperature environments in service. This dissertation presents a novel technique by which the impact response of FGM plates is characterized for low-velocity, low- to medium-energy impact loads. An experiment was designed where strain histories in FGM …

The Role Of Silicon Content On Environmental Degradations Of T91 Steels, Ajit K. Roy, D. Maitra, Pankaj Kumar Aug 2008

The Role Of Silicon Content On Environmental Degradations Of T91 Steels, Ajit K. Roy, D. Maitra, Pankaj Kumar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

T91 grade steels showed a gradual enhancement in tensile ductility at ambient temperature due to an increase in Si content from 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent (wt.%). However, the ultimate tensile strength was reduced only above 1.5 wt.% Si. The corrosion potential became more active in an acidic solution with increasing temperature. The cracking susceptibility in a similar environment under a slow-strain-rate (SSR) condition was enhanced at higher temperatures showing reduced ductility, time to failure, and true failure stress. Cathodic potentials applied to the test specimens in SSR testing caused an enhanced cracking tendency at 30 and 60°C, suggesting hydrogen …

Tensile Deformation Of A Nickel-Base Alloy At Elevated Temperatures, Ajit K. Roy, Anand Venkatesh, Vikram Marthandam Aug 2008

Tensile Deformation Of A Nickel-Base Alloy At Elevated Temperatures, Ajit K. Roy, Anand Venkatesh, Vikram Marthandam

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The results of tensile testing involving Waspaloy indicate that the failure strain was gradually reduced at temperatures ranging between ambient and 300 °C. Further, serrations were observed in the engineering stress versus strain diagrams in the temperature range of 300-600 °C. The reduced failure strain and the formation of serrations in these temperature regimes could be the result of dynamic strain aging of this alloy. The extent of work hardening due to plastic deformation was reduced at temperatures above 300 °C. A combination of ductile and intergranular brittle failures was seen at temperatures above 600 °C. γ′ was detected at …

Development Of Low Temperature Alpha Alumina Coatings By Ac Magnetron Sputtering, Andrew Cloud May 2008

Development Of Low Temperature Alpha Alumina Coatings By Ac Magnetron Sputtering, Andrew Cloud

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Alpha-phase aluminum oxide thin films were created using an Isoflux ICM-10 dual target inverted cylindrical magnetron sputtering system using mid-frequency AC power supplies. Alpha alumina films were deposited at a magnetron power of 6 kW, 50% oxygen partial pressure by volume, and -35 V DC bias. Film thickness, substrate material, and position and orientation within the deposition chamber were varied. To ensure the deposition conditions are suitable for alloys, the substrate temperature was measured using temperature indicating liquids. The experimental results, supported by Explicit Euler numerical analysis, revealed a steady state temperature of ~480°C at 6kW. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) …

The Effect Of Elevated Temperature On The Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Nickel Alloy In-100, John F. Ownby Apr 2008

The Effect Of Elevated Temperature On The Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Nickel Alloy In-100, John F. Ownby

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studied the effect of elevated temperature (600 C) on the fretting fatigue behavior of IN-100. First, fretting and plain fatigue S-N curves were determined over a large range of applied stress at an identical stress ratio of 0.03 at 600 C and for fretting tests, with a constant contact load. The partial slip condition was verified by using hysteresis between shear force and axial stress techniques. The contact width and the crack initiation location were observed for all of the fretting specimens. The contact widths were consistent with expected values and the crack initiation location was at the …

An Experimental Technique For Developing Intermediate Strain Rates In Ductile Metals, Hugh E. Gardenier Iv Mar 2008

An Experimental Technique For Developing Intermediate Strain Rates In Ductile Metals, Hugh E. Gardenier Iv

Theses and Dissertations

Quantifying the strain-rate sensitive dynamic properties of structural materials is an important area of research in the solid mechanics field. Property evaluation is typically accomplished using dynamic tests which involve rapid loading or impact of specimens. In these tests, inertial forces and wave propagation make it difficult to accurately record the material response to a loading condition at an equivalent location. Furthermore, these tests typically generate high strain rates (in excess of 103 s−1) and an experimental method for generating rates of strain in the intermediate strain rate regime which is relatively simple, low cost, and reliable …

Investigation Into Fretting Fatigue Under Cyclic Contact Load And In Conjuction With Fatigue Of Titanium Alloy, Abdulla A. Al-Noaimi Mar 2008

Investigation Into Fretting Fatigue Under Cyclic Contact Load And In Conjuction With Fatigue Of Titanium Alloy, Abdulla A. Al-Noaimi

Theses and Dissertations

Fretting fatigue is the surface damage that occurs at the interface between two components that are undergoing a small amplitude oscillatory movements. It results in a reduction of the material life comparing to the plain fatigue. Most of the previous works were accomplished under a constant applied contact load and a little effort has been done under a variable contact load, while none of these studies have taken the phase difference between the axial and the contact load. The primary goal of this study is to investigate the effect of phase difference between axial and contact loads on fretting fatigue …

Stereolithography Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogels With Application In Tissue Engineering As Peripheral Nerve Regeneration Scaffolds, Karina Arcaute

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, rapid prototyping (RP) technologies initially developed to create prototypes prior to production for the automotive, aerospace, and other industries, have found applications in tissue engineering (TE). Several different RP technologies are being used to fabricate biocompatible 3D structures with controlled micro- and macro-scale characteristics. The focus of this research was to explore the capabilities of the RP technology, stereolithography (SL), for creating complex, 3D scaffolds with applications in TE using a photocrosslinkable biopolymer, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The primary objective was to create an implantable multi-lumen nerve guidance conduit (NGC) for the regeneration of peripheral nerves.

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were performed on bulk heterojunction regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RR-P3HT) [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl esters spin-cast films with different film processing conditions to correlate the crystalline nanostructure of P3HT with the corresponding solar cell performance. The increase in long wavelength absorption for solvent annealed films is related to highly conjugated crystal structure of RR-P3HT phase-separated in the active layer. Upon thermal annealing, the solvent annealed 50-nm-thick device shows high solar cell performance with fill factor up to 73% and power conversion efficiency of 3.80%.
