Effect Of Intake Temperature And Boost Pressure On The Auto-Ignition Of Fuels With Different Cetane Numbers And Volatilities, Chandrasekharan Jayakumar

The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of air inlet temperature and boost pressure on the auto-ignition of fuels that have different CNs and volatilities in a single cylinder diesel engine. The inlet air temperature is varied over a range of 30°C to 110°C at a constant intake pressure of 1.1 bar. The boost pressure is varied from 1.1 bar to 1.5 bar at a constant intake temperature of 60°C. All engine tests are run at steady-state conditions. Diesel engines have been known for their high thermal efficiency and specific power output, but there is concern about engine-out NOx and particulate matter emissions. To meet the current emission standards, advanced diesel engines are fitted with electronically controlled fuel injection systems and sophisticated and expensive after-treatment devices. Further improvements are still needed to meet future goals in better fuel economy and the more stringent emission standards. The reaction of aluminum (Al) powder with water has the potential for on demand hydrogen generation. Conventional Al powders, however, react with water slowly due to a highly protective oxide layer on the particle surface. Current methods for Al activation involve harmful and expensive materials. This thesis describes experimental investigation of thermal and combustion phenomena as well as structure for self- propagating combustion synthesis of porous Ni - Ti intermetallic aimed for structural biomedical application. The control parameters for the porosity distribution have been investigated experimentally through varying the preheat temperature, initial porosity, initial elemental particle size, and applied pressure during the fabrication process. Ni and Ti elemental powders are mixed using a 1:1 ratio. The mixture is compressed using several different compression forces to produce cylindrical samples of 1.1 cm diameter and 2-3cm length, with initial porosity ranging from 30% to 40%. The samples …

Improving the combustion efficiency of fuels in combustion devices has become imperative in the face of the diminishing rate of the discovery of new energy sources and an ever increasing demand for energy. While there are other ways of improving combustion efficiency, this study investigated the effect of electric field on the combustion of fuel droplets. In order to model the physics of the problem, a mass transfer evaporation model, heat transfer evaporation model and a simple burning droplet model were considered and their result compared to existing result from literature.
