An Electric Commerce Platform For Material Testing Laboratories, John Ferris Mitchener May 2023

An Electric Commerce Platform For Material Testing Laboratories, John Ferris Mitchener

Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of the Internet has allowed businesses to create new sales and marketing channels to provide value for their customers in the marketplace. Engineering manufacturers and suppliers have taken advantage of the internet to automate the customer service aspects of their businesses as well as to market their services in a cost-effective but widespread manner. This work aims to apply the practices and benefits of electronic commerce (e-commerce) to a material testing laboratory through the creation of a functioning website with e-commerce features. The effects of Search Engine Optimization, website accessibility issues, marketing considerations, security concerns, and common business …

Four Point Flexure Beam Fixture, Nikolay Bobritskiy Jan 2020

Four Point Flexure Beam Fixture, Nikolay Bobritskiy

All Undergraduate Projects

Structural design is one of many important aspects in mechanical engineering. Newly discovered composites are making their way into the engineering world. These materials have certain properties which need to be tested in several ways before they can be put to application. One of such tests include the four-point bend test. The fixtures that can be purchased currently can be expensive, typically ranging from $700-$1,000. The University has been struggling to afford commercial jig at this cost and would be helpful if one were available. The device consists of a 6061-aluminum base making it light, cheap, and faster to manufacture …

Environmentally Friendly Sneakerboot Shanks And Their Effect On Aerobic Performance And Human Walking Gait, Adam Ashcroft Jun 2018

Environmentally Friendly Sneakerboot Shanks And Their Effect On Aerobic Performance And Human Walking Gait, Adam Ashcroft

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research endeavor is to identify and record the differences in human performance from altering the shank material of a Forsake “Trail” sneakerboot. Three materials were analyzed in this study: the legacy nylon material that is currently used in Forsake boots, a PEEK thermoplastic impregnated carbon fiber, and a resin impregnated flax composite. The stiffness of each material was calculated using a standardized ISO 18896 longitudinal stiffness test. Each shank was then installed in size 10.5 (USA) “Trail” boots using an identical installation method in Forsake’s factory. The human performance tests were quantified by measuring the heart …

Applications Of Latent Heat Storage Using Phase Change Materials, Daniel Giroux Jun 2018

Applications Of Latent Heat Storage Using Phase Change Materials, Daniel Giroux

Honors Theses

Thermal Storage Systems are gaining more attention in recent years with the increased emphasis on more renewable energy sources. Energy storage is necessary whenever there is greater amounts of energy being produced than is required. Various improvements to the conventional heat storage system can be made by integrating latent heat storage into the conventional heat storage system. Latent heat storage can be utilized for thermal storage applications by using phase change materials, materials that will undergo a change in their physical state in the temperature range desired for heat storage.

Analysis was conducted on four different waxes considering the waxes …

Measurement Of Skin Friction Drag On Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Surfaces With Potential Application To Technical Swimsuit Design, Matthew R. Wahl Jun 2013

Measurement Of Skin Friction Drag On Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Surfaces With Potential Application To Technical Swimsuit Design, Matthew R. Wahl

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to fabricate and test a prototype technical swimsuit (low-drag suit worn by swimmers in their most important races) that utilized the hydrophobic properties of silica aerogels. This process involved coating a preexisting suit with aerogel material and completing the build of the newly redesigned water channel at Union College. To evaluate performance of materials, surface drag testing of airfoils coated in aerogel materials was performed using a dynamometer in the water channel. Several additions were made to the water channel in order to reduce variation in drag results. Variation was successfully decreased from 134% …

Development Of A Particle Flow Test For Rotational Molding, Russell B. Whatcott Jun 2008

Development Of A Particle Flow Test For Rotational Molding, Russell B. Whatcott

Theses and Dissertations

One of the current testing method (the Dry Flow test) to qualify resin for use in production in the rotomolding process has been shown to have many flaws in both equipment and procedure. Research was done here to investigate a possible alternative that could eliminate some of these testing deficiencies. By reducing equipment and operator errors, the testing of materials becomes more valuable of an exercise. The Angular Flow test developed in this research can increase repeatability. By coming to understand the rotational molding process better, an evaluation that can give more valid information was devised.

Micro, Meso And Macro Materials Processing Using High-Speed Liquid Projectiles, Veljko Samardzic May 2008

Micro, Meso And Macro Materials Processing Using High-Speed Liquid Projectiles, Veljko Samardzic

Dissertations

The objective of this research is developmentof aknowledge base of materials processing by the impact of high-speed liquid projectiles. The work involved experimental study of generation and applications of high-speed liquid projectiles. The projectiles were generated by the launchers, which used gunpowder as an energy source. The experiments were carried out at the low (O.35g of the powder), middle (1.2g) and high (10g to 70g) levels of energy consumptions and at several different launchers modification.

Experimental investigation of effect of gun powder mass on energy of projectile was conducted for ductile and brittle targets. An array of experimental …

Effect Of Different Additives On Properties Of Virgin Pp/Recycled Pp To Substitute Pc, Myriam Nabil Raouf Demian Feb 2007

Effect Of Different Additives On Properties Of Virgin Pp/Recycled Pp To Substitute Pc, Myriam Nabil Raouf Demian

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The use of polymers in many products have increased tremendously in the past few years leading to an increase in the amount of plastic waste generated, which in return became a huge problem. There are several ways to handle these wastes including; landfilling, chemical recycling, mechanical recycling and incineration. In Egypt mechanical recycling takes place in order to re-use these polymers in new products. The concern of this thesis is to try to find solution for some of the unused wastes by mechanically recycling them. The research aims to modify the properties of one of the most available polymers which …
