Concentrated solar power (CSP) is an alternative and sustainable way to produce energy. Studies have shown that running these plants at high temperatures above 700°C can increase the thermal efficiency in heat transfer. Molten salt is usually used as the heat transfer medium but cannot be used due to its low maximum temperature and high freezing point. Running these plants at high temperature brings up the concern of erosion and oxidation. Abrasion erosion occurs through the interaction of particles and material. Nanofluids are nano-size-powder suspensions in liquids that are mainly studied for their abnormal thermal transport properties, and hence as enhanced alternatives to ordinary cooling fluids. The tribological effects of nanofluids are, however, largely unknown, in particular their likely wear and/or erosion effects, because of their interaction with cooling-system (heat-exchanger) materials. The thesis presents research to establish methodologies for testing and evaluating surface-change by nanofluid impact. Scouring is the process of soil or sediment erosion due to flowing water, which can lead to bed degradation and compromised transportation infrastructure. In the decade before 2000, over half of the 500 bridge failures in the United States were caused by flooding or scouring. To gain a better grasp of the effects of extreme weather events, such as Tropical Storm Irene, on the scouring process, this work is focused on a first principle understanding of the mechanism(s) of scour.
