Zero-Power Ac Current Sensor, Omar Aragonez Apr 2022

Zero-Power Ac Current Sensor, Omar Aragonez

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

In this study, a magnetic piezoelectric cantilever powered AC current and frequency sensor is proposed. This paper covers the configuration of the experimental setup, finite element modeling of the magnetic coupling, and the optimal spatial location of the magnetic proof mass in relation to the wire for smart grid applications. Solid and stranded copper wires of various gauges were used and carried current up to 30A. The magnets act as a proof mass to lower the frequency while also coupling to the magnetic field generated by the current carrying wire. The frequency of the AC current produces a sinusoidal force …

Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Improvement, Nathan Embaugh, Jason Mack, Jeremiah Fitzgerald, Zachary J. Lindsey Jan 2020

Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Improvement, Nathan Embaugh, Jason Mack, Jeremiah Fitzgerald, Zachary J. Lindsey

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The energy harvester is used to convert a portion of the tire deflection waste energy to power up tire embedded sensors. A piezoelectric energy harvester is designed and some preliminary tests are done on it. So far, it has been shown that this design is sufficient for tire application. The team will need to modify the design of the energy harvester, the measurement setup and add a temperature and a strain senor to the existing setup so that the tire deflection and temperature can be measured and at the same time the energy harvester should be tested to see how …

Additive Manufacturing Of Energy Harvesting Material System For Active Wireless Mems, Victor Fernando Elicerio Jan 2018

Additive Manufacturing Of Energy Harvesting Material System For Active Wireless Mems, Victor Fernando Elicerio

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Additive manufacturing (AM - most commonly known as 3D printing) is a fabrication method and aims to increase production efficiency while lowering costs of constructing quality components for industry application when compared to traditional machining. In addition to this, AM possesses capabilities that far exceed machining as complex geometries are achievable through an array of technologies in a wide variety of materials. The AM process begins with a computer aided design (CAD) which creates a design path for a 3D printer to follow. By following this path, components are built from bottom to top in a layer by layer fashion. …

Investigation Of Concurrent Energy Harvesting From Ambient Vibrations And Wind, Amin Bibo Aug 2014

Investigation Of Concurrent Energy Harvesting From Ambient Vibrations And Wind, Amin Bibo

All Dissertations

In recent years, many new concepts for micro-power generation have been introduced to harness wasted energy from the environment and maintain low-power electronics including wireless sensors, data transmitters, controllers, and medical implants. Generally, such systems aim to provide a cheap and compact alternative energy source for applications where battery charging or replacement is expensive, time consuming, and/or cumbersome. Within the vast field of micro-power generation, utilizing the piezoelectric effect to generate an electric potential in response to mechanical stimuli has recently flourished as a major thrust area. Based on the nature of the ambient excitation, piezoelectric energy harvesters are divided …

Nonlinear Energy Harvesting Under White Noise, Qifan He Nov 2013

Nonlinear Energy Harvesting Under White Noise, Qifan He

All Theses

While purposeful introduction of stiffness nonlinearities into the dynamics of energy harvesters is aimed at enhancing performance under non-stationary and random excitations, most of the conclusions reported in the current literature are based on the steady-state response which assumes a harmonic fixed-frequency excitation. As a result, we still do not have a clear understanding of how the nature of the excitation influences the output power, or what role stiffness nonlinearities play in the transduction of energy harvesters under random excitations. To fill this gap in the current knowledge, this thesis investigates the response of nonlinear mono- and bi-stable energy harvesters …

Rotary Displacement Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Headman Sanei Jan 2013

Rotary Displacement Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Headman Sanei

Masters Theses

“This study proposes a novel piezoelectric energy harvester for rotary motion applications. It is based on an annular unimorph plate, mounted on a shaft rotating at a constant angular velocity, under constant amplitude point-wise force. The mathematical model and the analysis was proposed for the inverse problem of a rotating disk under a static stationary force. The disk, however, is assumed to be stationary subjected to a traveling force. The distributed parameter electromechanical equations governing the behavior of the system are provided in closed-form, incorporating both an AC and a simple rectifier circuit. The performance of the energy harvester was …

An Electromagnetic Energy Harvester For Powering Consumer Electronics, Xiyuan Liu Aug 2012

An Electromagnetic Energy Harvester For Powering Consumer Electronics, Xiyuan Liu

All Theses

This thesis introduces an electromagnetic vibratory energy harvester to power consumer electronics by generating electricity from the strides taken during walking or jogging. The harvester consists of a magnetic pendulum oscillating between two fixed magnets. The pendulum behaves similar to a rotor in a DC generator, while the fixed magnets, which are poled opposite to the pendulum, provide magnetic restoring forces similar to mechanical springs. When attached to a person's arm, the swinging motion subjects the magnetic pendulum to base excitations. Consequently, the pendulum oscillates near a stator which has three poles of wound copper coils. The motion of the …

Smart Nanocoated Structure For Energy Harvesting At Low Frequency Vibration, Sudhanshu Sharma Jan 2012

Smart Nanocoated Structure For Energy Harvesting At Low Frequency Vibration, Sudhanshu Sharma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing demands of energy which is cleaner and has an unlimited supply has led development in the field of energy harvesting. Piezoelectric materials can be used as a means of transforming ambient vibrations into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power other devices. With the recent surge of micro scale devices, piezoelectric power generation can provide a convenient alternative to traditional power sources. In this research, a piezoelectric power generator composite prototype was developed to maximize the power output of the system. A lead zirconate titanate (PZT) composite structure was formed and mounted on a cantilever bar …
