Over three million people in the U.S. suffer from forearm and hand disabilities. This can result from aging, neurological disorders (e.g., stroke), chronic disease (e.g., arthritis), and injuries. Injuries to hands comprise one-third of all work-related injuries worldwide. This can lead to difficulties with activities of daily living (ADL), where one needs to grasp, lift, and release objects in the household. There is a rise in demand for assistive orthoses and gloves that can allow many people to regain their grasping/releasing ability and, thereby, their independence. Optimized peripheral tremor suppression could address many limitations of surgical or medicinal treatments of Essential Tremor, however it is not well understood how the tremorogenic activity is distributed among the muscles of the upper limb, and therefore how to optimize such suppression. We recorded electromyographic (EMG) activity in the 15 major superficial muscles from the shoulder to the wrist while subjects performed postural and kinetic tasks similar to activities of daily living. We calculated the power spectral density and computed the total power in the tremor band (4"12 Hz) for each muscle, from which we determined the distribution of tremorogenic …

Soft material-enabled electronics can demonstrate extreme mechanical flexibility and stretchability. Such compliant, comfortable electronics allow continuous, long-term measurement of biopotentials on the skin. Manufacturing of the stretchable electronic devices is enabled by the recent development combining materials transfer printing and microfabrication. However, the existing method using inorganic materials and multi-layered polymers requires long material preparation time and expensive processing cost due to the requirement of microfabrication tools and complicated transfer printing steps. This thesis describes the development of a wearable mechatronic brace for upper limb rehabilitation that can be used at any stage of motion training after surgical reconstruction of brachial plexus nerves. The results of the mechanical design and the work completed towards finding the best torque transmission system are presented herein. As part of this mechatronic system, a customized control system was designed, tested and modified. The control strategy was improved by replacing a PID controller with a cascade controller. Motor coordination can be described by the activation of a few intermuscular coordination patterns, or muscle synergies. Muscle synergy can be defined as a relatively fixed pattern of activation across a set of muscles. The neural mechanisms underlying muscle synergies remain to be fairly unknown.
