A Numerical Study Of Water Entry Problems Based On Overset Meshes, Yanni Chang
A Numerical Study Of Water Entry Problems Based On Overset Meshes, Yanni Chang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations
A series of numerical experiments carried out on the water entry of circular cylinders are presented in this study. A cylinder was entering into the water with a prescribed inclined angle and velocity. The interface between water and air is tracked by the Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC) schemes in conjunction with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. PLIC schemes have been extensively employed in the VOF method for interface capturing in numerical simulations of multiphase flows. Dynamic overset meshes, which have been widely used for problems with relative motions and complex geometric shapes, are applied to handle the moving …
Simulating The Effects Of Floating Platforms, Tilted Rotors, And Breaking Waves For Offshore Wind Turbines, Hannah Johlas
Simulating The Effects Of Floating Platforms, Tilted Rotors, And Breaking Waves For Offshore Wind Turbines, Hannah Johlas
Doctoral Dissertations
Offshore wind energy is a rapidly expanding source of renewable energy worldwide, but many aspects of offshore wind turbine behavior are still poorly understood and are not accurately captured by low-cost engineering models used in the design process. To help improve these models, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can provide valuable insight into the complex fluid flows that affect offshore wind turbine power generation and structural loads. This research uses CFD simulations to examine three main topics important to future offshore wind development: how breaking waves affect structural loads for fixed-bottom wind turbines; how platform motions affect power generation, wake characteristics, …
Experimental And Computational Study Of Determining Mass Transport Parameters In Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries, Tugrul Y. Ertugrul
Experimental And Computational Study Of Determining Mass Transport Parameters In Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries, Tugrul Y. Ertugrul
Doctoral Dissertations
Vanadium redox flow batteries are a promising large-scale energy storage technology, but a number of challenges must be overcome for commercial implementation. At the cell level, mass transport contributes significantly to performance losses, limiting VRFB performance. Therefore, understanding mass transport mechanisms in the electrode is a critical step to mitigating such losses and optimizing VRFBs.
In this study, mass transport mechanisms (e.g. convection, diffusion) are investigated in a VRFB test bed using a strip cell architecture, having 1 cm2 active area. It is found that diffusion-dominated cells have large current gradients; convection-dominated cells have relatively uniform current distribution from …
Development And Applications Of Adjoint-Based Aerodynamic And Aeroacoustic Multidisciplinary Optimization For Rotorcraft, Ramiz Omur Icke
Development And Applications Of Adjoint-Based Aerodynamic And Aeroacoustic Multidisciplinary Optimization For Rotorcraft, Ramiz Omur Icke
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is one of the most popular proposed solutions for alleviating traffic problems in populated areas. In this context, the proposed types of vehicles mainly consist of rotors and propellers powered by electric motors. However, those rotary-wing components can contribute excessively to noise generation. Therefore, a significant noise concern emerges due to urban air vehicles in or around residential areas. Reducing noise emitted by air vehicles is critically important to improve public acceptance of such vehicles for operations in densely populated areas.
Two main objectives of the present dissertation are: (1) to expand the multidisciplinary optimization to …
Validation Of A Two-Dimensional Clinostat Design To Provide Functional Weightlessness To Custom Gas Exchange Vessels, Collin R. Topolski
Validation Of A Two-Dimensional Clinostat Design To Provide Functional Weightlessness To Custom Gas Exchange Vessels, Collin R. Topolski
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Understanding the impacts of microgravity on bacteria is vital for successful long duration space missions. In this environment, bacteria have been shown to become more virulent, more resistant to antibiotics and form more biofilms. To learn more about these phenomena, many experiments must be sent to the International Space Station, which is cost- and time prohibitive. Instead, the use of ground-based analogs is advantageous to define preliminary results that can later be verified with a space-based experiment. This research explored the development of an innovative 2D clinostat for simulating microgravity using bacteria. Computational fluid dynamics, standards established by previous literature …
Integrated Modelling Of Wastewater Treatment And Sewer Processes - Interactions Of Fluid Flow, Mass Transfer, And Biochemical Reactions, Ahmed Khalil
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Numerical modelling of wastewater management systems is crucial for investigating alternative designs and developing strategies for operation and control that improve the performance of the treatment stage (such as improving the aeration systems in activated sludge systems). Modelling can also help operators to mitigate common problems that arise from unwanted biochemical conversions in the sewer networks (such as the production of sulfide and methane). Therefore, this work focuses on two major areas related to modelling wastewater management systems. First, it seeks to develop more accurate models for aeration systems in activated sludge reactors. Second, it seeks to study the mathematical …
A Theory-Supported Machine Learning Model For The Prediction Of Melt Pool Geometry And Optimal Process Window In Metal Additive Manufacturing, Sina Tayebati
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Direct Energy Deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process capable of producing complicate-shaped or functionally graded components, and it is getting intense attention as a revolutionary technology to satisfy high demand in manufacturing process for the aerospace, automotive, and medical industries. However, the repeatability in geometries and properties of fabricated products is one of the most challenging issues for the DED process to be fully utilized, requiring comprehensive understanding of effect of processing conditions on the properties of fabricated parts, and development of relations among those conditions and properties. That is the motivation of this research. In this study, …
