Cfd Simulation Of Heat Enhancement In Internally Helical Grooved Tubes, Sogol Pirbastami Aug 2015

Cfd Simulation Of Heat Enhancement In Internally Helical Grooved Tubes, Sogol Pirbastami

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Heat exchanger devices are widely used in industries, air conditioning systems, refrigeration, etc. These devices have a major role in energy conservation; therefore, increasing the performance of heat exchangers helps save energy, costs and materials. The technique to increase the heat transfer performance is called heat augmentation, which can be applied to pipe surfaces and other surfaces which are used in heat exchangers to improve thermal performance. These techniques are categorized into 3 groups: passive, active and compound technique. In this study a helically machined rectangular groove on the inside of a 2.0 m tube with a diameter of 7.1mm …

Extensions Of High-Order Flux Correction Methods To Flows With Source Terms At Low Speeds, Jonathan L. Thorne May 2015

Extensions Of High-Order Flux Correction Methods To Flows With Source Terms At Low Speeds, Jonathan L. Thorne

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an attempt to mimic the physical world of fluids around us. In general, CFD simulations are completed by first making a mesh. Meshes are made of polygons that are arranged in such a way as to create the item in question and the fluid around it. There are many difficulties associated with mesh generation, and it can take days or weeks for a trained professional to produce adequate meshes. The CFD algorithms affect the accuracy of the simulation. Using high-order methods, more accurate results can be achieved than otherwise possible. Flux correction (FC) is a …

Simulation Of Infiltrating Rate Driven By Surface Tension-Viscosity Of Liquid Elements From The Titanium Group Into A Packed Bed, Arturo Medina Jan 2015

Simulation Of Infiltrating Rate Driven By Surface Tension-Viscosity Of Liquid Elements From The Titanium Group Into A Packed Bed, Arturo Medina

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The simulation of infusion of molten reactive metals (e.g., yttrium) into a porous, carbide packed bed to create carbide and boride composites was studied at ultrahigh temperatures (>1700°C). The infusion was investigated through a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) system of capillary pores and compared to a predicted analytical calculation formulated by Selmak and Rhines. Simulations of two-phase flow penetration of yttrium into a packed bed of B4C were investigated and compared with titanium, zirconium, hafnium, and samarium liquids. The non-reactive, liquid metal infusion was primarily driven by the surface tension and viscosity. The liquid metal depth and rate of …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of The Effects Of Water Injection In A Diesel Engine, Rabun Z. Wallace Jan 2015

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of The Effects Of Water Injection In A Diesel Engine, Rabun Z. Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water injection has been used in internal combustion engines for many years. It has been used to cool combustion temperatures, reduce emissions, and in some instances clean carbon buildup from the cylinder. Research has shown that the water to fuel mass ratio is most effective between 20-30%, so the upper and lower limit were used for simulations in Converge CFD. To validate the CFD model, a case without water injection was compared to experimental data from Sandia National Laboratory. The predicted in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate showed good agreement with the experimental data. Cases were run with the injection …
