Towards Automation Of Aluminum Cell Ramming Process, Maryam Salem Mohamed Alkaabi Dec 2021

Towards Automation Of Aluminum Cell Ramming Process, Maryam Salem Mohamed Alkaabi

Theses

Newly installed cathode blocks in an aluminium reduction cell, expand due to a rapid increase of temperature when passing a high current at the start-up of the cell. High thermal stresses may result if cathode blocks are lined without gaps, and this can lead to cracking of the cathodes and failure of the cell. On the other hand, leaving gaps would cause failure due to molten metal infiltration in the gaps. To overcome these problems carbon-based ramming material is used to fill these gaps. Currently ‘Filling’ is carried out manually or partially automated, but this needs to be fully automated …

Flutter Suppression By Active Controller Of A Two-Dimensional Wing With A Flap, Abdallah Tarabulsi Nov 2021

Flutter Suppression By Active Controller Of A Two-Dimensional Wing With A Flap, Abdallah Tarabulsi

Theses

Flutter is a divergent oscillation of an aeroelastic structure, and one of a family of aeroelastic instability phenomena, that results from the interaction of elastic and inertial forces of the structure with the surrounding aerodynamic forces. Airfoil Flutter is important due to its catastrophic effect on the durability and operational safety of the structure. Traditionally, flutter is prevented within an aircraft's flight envelope using passive approaches such as optimizing stiffness distribution, mass balancing, or modifying geometry during the design phase. Although these methods are effective but they led to heavier airfoil designs. On the other hand, active control methods allow …

Heat Transfer Intensification In Microchannel Heat Sinks (Mchs) - Wavy Channels Embedded With Pin Fins, Anas Mohammad Amin Alkhazaleh Jun 2021

Heat Transfer Intensification In Microchannel Heat Sinks (Mchs) - Wavy Channels Embedded With Pin Fins, Anas Mohammad Amin Alkhazaleh

Theses

This work conceptualizes heat sinks for electronics employing wavy/sinusoidal microchannels embedded with pin fins and subsequently analyzes their performance in terms of thermal resistance, pressure drop, maximum chip temperature, and the associated pumping power due to the pressure drop. The conceptualized wavy Microchannel Heat Sink (MCHS) is mathematically modeled using a combination of governing equations including energy equations, continuity equations, and Navier- Stokes equations. The performance of the wavy microchannel heat sink embedded with pin fins is evaluated based on a parametric study covering multiple parameters; microchannel’s amplitude, frequency, hydraulic diameter, pin fins’ diameter, and location, and Reynolds number. The …

Modelling And Control Of A Two-Link Rigid-Flexible Manipulator, Rahma Saeed Rasheed Alnajjar

Theses

The literature lacks data on the reliability of 3D models created by Autodesk Inventor software and imported to MATLAB Simulink software in comparison to mathematically generated models. In this contribution, a two-link rigid-flexible manipulator modelled in two different methods was demonstrated, one of which is using Lagrange equations and Finite Element Method to generate a mathematical model of the manipulator, and the other is creating a 3D model with the aid of Autodesk Inventor then import to MATLAB Simulink, both models were subsequently controlled by three types of controllers, conventional PID controller, LQR controller, and LQG controller. The research demonstrated …

Numerical Investigation Of Mesh-Based Enhancement Of Vapor Bubble Condensation, Omar Darwish Ali Alqadi Alhammadi

Theses

The aim of this work is to study the vapor bubble condensation process and the enhancement technique via affecting bubbles dynamic using a mesh-based structure. The bubble dynamics and thermal behavior are studied by considering the heat and mass transfer through the bubble’s interface area between the vapor and liquid regions and the resulting condensation effects. The thermal characteristics of bubbles are observed considering the initial and final liquid temperatures. Additionally, the bubble dynamics are studied in terms of several parameters including the relative velocity of the bubble, bubble deformation, interfacial area, and the bubble diameters. The relation between the …

Bending-Torsion Flutter Analysis Of A Viscoelastic Tapered Wing Carrying An Engine And Subjected To A Follower Thrust Force, Youssef Shaaban Abdelfattah Matter Apr 2021

Bending-Torsion Flutter Analysis Of A Viscoelastic Tapered Wing Carrying An Engine And Subjected To A Follower Thrust Force, Youssef Shaaban Abdelfattah Matter

Theses

Flutter, a dynamic divergent instability, is one of the significant phenomena of Aeroelasticity. This dangerous aeroelastic phenomenon can occur to any flexible structure subjected to aerodynamic forces such as aircraft wings, bridges, buildings, etc. It is important to analyze the flutter in order to predict the speed and frequency at which it occurs so that structural damages and failures can be avoided. This thesis is concerned with non-dimensional parametric modeling of the flutter of a viscoelastic tapered wing with an attached engine. The main objectives of this thesis are to determine regions of stability and boundaries of flutter speed and …
