Hybrid-Cooled Data Center Server Layout Optimization For Air-Side Heat Recovery, Assel Sakanova, Sajad Alimohammadi, Jaakko Mcevody, Tim Persoons

Conference Papers

The rapid increase in energy demand for data center requires improved cooling techniques. This study investigates, numerically and experimentally, the energy efficiency optimization based on server level air flows and also identifies the potential for waste heat recovery from the air stream for a hybrid air/liquid cooled server. Multi-objective genetic algorithm and entropy generation minimization are chosen as tools to address the multiple objectives involved in the problem and examine the cooling performance and waste heat recovery potential. Selected experimental measurements have successfully validated the CFD simulation model.

Benchmarking The Application Of Detached Eddy Simulation Techniques In Data Center Server Flow Modelling Using Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry, Sajad Alimohammadi, Jaakko Mcevody, Yan Delauré, Tim Persoons Sep 2018

Benchmarking The Application Of Detached Eddy Simulation Techniques In Data Center Server Flow Modelling Using Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry, Sajad Alimohammadi, Jaakko Mcevody, Yan Delauré, Tim Persoons

Conference Papers

The evolution and new trends in low-cost cloud computing services and growing data analysis loads on data centers keep increasing the power density of the servers as well as the global electricity consumption of data centers. The server component arrangement is mainly bounded by compactness of the device and can be somewhat overlooked. Both optical visualization and computational simulation techniques can be utilized to quantify complex turbulent flow fields inside the servers, and thus optimize thermal flows. The primary stage of a comprehensive research to enhance data center server cooling performance and energy efficiency is reported on here. A full-scale …

Development And Validation Of A Numerical Model Of The Co2 Dry-Ice Blasting Process For Aircraft Engine Cleaning Applications, Arthur Rudek May 2018

Development And Validation Of A Numerical Model Of The Co2 Dry-Ice Blasting Process For Aircraft Engine Cleaning Applications, Arthur Rudek

Doctoral

On-wing cleaning of engine compressors for commercial aircraft is a required maintenance task which results in greater operating efficiency and lower emission rates. It is typically carried out by injection of water and detergents into the intake of an engine while the engine is being cranked by the starter. Two drawbacks of this process are the risk of icing in cold weather and the collection and treatment of the water effluent. The dry-ice blasting process, a cleaning system which uses pressurized air and CO2 dry-ice particles as cleaning agent, has been proposed as an alternative method which does not suffer …

Evaluation Of Wind Energy Forecasts: The Undervalued Importance Of Data Preparation, Gianni Goretti, Aidan Duffy Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Wind Energy Forecasts: The Undervalued Importance Of Data Preparation, Gianni Goretti, Aidan Duffy

Conference papers

The evaluation of wind energy forecasts is a key task for those involved in the wind power sector, and the accurate evaluation of forecasts is fundamental to make informed decisions both in business and research. To evaluate the accuracy of a forecast, observed values must be compared against forecast values over a test period. At times, however, the actual generation of a wind farm can be affected by factors that are outside the scope of the forecast model. Evaluating a forecast using a data set that includes such out-of-scope observations might give a biased or inconsistent assessment. In the data …

Task Complexity, And Operators’ Capabilities As Predictor Of Human Error: Modeling Framework And An Example Of Application, Maria Chiara Leva, Alberto Caimo, R. Duane, Micaela Demichela, Lorenzo Comberti Jan 2018

Task Complexity, And Operators’ Capabilities As Predictor Of Human Error: Modeling Framework And An Example Of Application, Maria Chiara Leva, Alberto Caimo, R. Duane, Micaela Demichela, Lorenzo Comberti

Conference Papers

This paper presents the initial framework adopted to assess human error in assembly tasks at a large manufacturing company in Ireland. The model to characterize and predict human error presented in this paper is linked conceptually to the model introduced by Rasch (1980), where the probability of a specified outcome is modelled as a logistic function of the difference between the person capacity and item difficulty. The model needs to be modified to take into account an outcome that is not dichotomous and feed into the interaction between two macro factors: (a) Task complexity: that sum-marises all factors contributing to …

Effect Of High- And Low-Molecular-Weight Hyaluronic-Acid-Functionalized-Az31 Mg And Ti Alloys On Proliferation And Differentiation Of Osteoblast Cells, Sankalp Agarwal, Brendan Duffy, James Curtin, Swarna Jaiswal Jan 2018

Effect Of High- And Low-Molecular-Weight Hyaluronic-Acid-Functionalized-Az31 Mg And Ti Alloys On Proliferation And Differentiation Of Osteoblast Cells, Sankalp Agarwal, Brendan Duffy, James Curtin, Swarna Jaiswal

The quality of patient care has increased dramatically in recent years because of the development of lightweight orthopedic metal implants. The success of these orthopedic implants may be compromised by impaired cytocompatibility and osteointegration. Biomimetic surface engineering of metal implants using biomacromolecules including hyaluronic acid (HA) has been used an effective approach to provide conditions favorable for the growth of bone forming cells. To date, there have been limited studies on osteoblasts functions in response to metal substrates modified with the hyaluronic acid of different molecular weight for orthopedic applications. In this study, we evaluated the osteoblasts functions such as …

Ambiqual – A Full Reference Objective Quality Metric For Ambisonic Spatial Audio, Miroslaw Narbutt, Andrew Allen, Jan Skoglund, Michael Chinen, Andrew Hines Jan 2018

Ambiqual – A Full Reference Objective Quality Metric For Ambisonic Spatial Audio, Miroslaw Narbutt, Andrew Allen, Jan Skoglund, Michael Chinen, Andrew Hines

Conference papers

Streaming spatial audio over networks requires efficient encoding techniques that compress the raw audio content without compromising quality of experience. Streaming service providers such as YouTube need a perceptually relevant objective audio quality metric to monitor users’ perceived quality and spatial localization accuracy. In this paper we introduce a full reference objective spatial audio quality metric, AMBIQUAL, which assesses both Listening Quality and Localization Accuracy. In our solution both metrics are derived directly from the B-format Ambisonic audio. The metric extends and adapts the algorithm used in ViSQOLAudio, a full reference objective metric designed for assessing speech and audio quality. …
