Parameter Determination And Experimental Validation Of A Wire Feed Additive Manufacturing Model, Kannan Suresh Kumar Jan 2015

Parameter Determination And Experimental Validation Of A Wire Feed Additive Manufacturing Model, Kannan Suresh Kumar

Masters Theses

“Laser metal deposition is an additive manufacturing method with great scope and robustness. The wire fed additive manufacturing method has great opportunities in space applications and other zero gravity manufacturing processes. Process parameters play an important role in controlling the complex phenomenon and obtaining an ideal manufactured part. These parameters can be efficiently determined using simulation tools which are highly essential in visualizing real world experiments, therefore saving time and experimental costs. The objective of this study is to develop a transient 3D model of laser aided wire feed metal deposition which realizes the heat transfer and fluid flow behavior …

Performance Evaluation Of Polyurethane Composites Using Vacuum Infusion Process, Mohaned M. Mohamed Jan 2014

Performance Evaluation Of Polyurethane Composites Using Vacuum Infusion Process, Mohaned M. Mohamed

Doctoral Dissertations

"Glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites have promising applications in infrastructures due to their low cost, high specific stiffness/strength, and corrosion resistance. The pultrusion process is often used to manufacture glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane (PU) composite. The objective of this study is to use thermoset PU resin to manufacture high quality composites for infrastructure applications using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. Using VARTM to fabricate PU resins presents unique challenges. Several modifications however have helped with overcoming these problems. In part I of the research, the mechanical performance of two different PU resin not only evaluated but also compared to one …

Development Of A New Temporary Fastener For Aerospace Automation, Xiangwen Zhang Jan 2013

Development Of A New Temporary Fastener For Aerospace Automation, Xiangwen Zhang

Masters Theses

"Temporary fasteners are required in aircraft assembly, especially in the assembly of wings, fuselage, and aircraft skin's substructure prior to drilling holes for permanent fasteners by automated drilling machines. The objective was to develop a temporary fastener that can be installed, clamped, loosened, and removed from one side with a short head length. Published papers, web pages and patents relating to temporary fasteners were reviewed. Then by considering the ability to meet the operation requirements and concerns, a temporary fastener was designed with the following advantages:

  • a simple structure that can be easily fabricated
  • a short head length to save …
