"Previously a limited amount of investigation has been done to describe the rotational motion of fluid in a draining tank. To date tank design has been based on trial and error, since the physical mechanisms of actual draining have not been recognized. This investigation has been made to develop a technique for the measurement of the motion of the fluid during the draining process and to present the results of the observed surface velocity of the liquid as a function of depth of fluid and its distance from the center of the vortex core.
