Human Powered Vehicle Capstone, Maya L. Washington, Ryan Apolonio, Marc Sunga, John Rettenmier, Dr. Allen Wilson May 2021

Human Powered Vehicle Capstone, Maya L. Washington, Ryan Apolonio, Marc Sunga, John Rettenmier, Dr. Allen Wilson

Honors Thesis

In the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC), students design, develop, construct, and test different designs of human-powered vehicles. The design utilizes two wheels, the rear of which is responsible for power transmission from a pedal crank and braking through a disc and caliper. The design also utilizes the front wheel fork wheel for steering. Steering and braking are controlled by two levers on the handlebars. To determine whether the design was sufficient, it was compared to the standards set by ASME, including maximum weight, minimum speed, minimum turning radius, minimum ride distance, load testing, harness verification, and a complete …

Collapsible Prosthetic Shower Leg, Amanuel Matias, Mahsa Ebrahim May 2021

Collapsible Prosthetic Shower Leg, Amanuel Matias, Mahsa Ebrahim

Honors Thesis

The purpose of this capstone project is to build a collapsible prosthetic shower leg that can provide a transtibial amputee with reliable support while showering. Phil Tamoush, an 83-year old transtibial amputee, was the inspiration for this work. Phil’s constant travel for his arbitration work leaves him without the option to bring along his usual shower leg due to the additional space it takes up in his travel bag. There are currently no commercially available prosthetic shower legs that can collapse into a condensed unit, so this capstone project explores an unexplored field for which there is a significant need. …

Repurposing Plastic Waste In El Cercado, Joseph Dooling, Kirby Townsend, Brendan Smith May 2019

Repurposing Plastic Waste In El Cercado, Joseph Dooling, Kirby Townsend, Brendan Smith

Honors Thesis

This project aims to assist the community of El Cercado in the Dominican Republic in turning their plastic waste into useful products. The design team developed a first iteration shredder, injector, and aluminum mold which future design teams could further iterate in order to make products out of waste plastic. Different products were researched to ensure that they can be sold or used in the community. The goal of producing these items is to stimulate economic activity in the community by creating economic opportunity. The design shall also be sustainable in three ways. It shall reuse plastic waste while also …

Subscale Mars Colonization Mission, Cameron J. Lamack, James Lumsden, Sean Nevin, Donner Schoeffler, Riley Evers, Alexandra Poulakos, Skyler Tan, Anthony Keba, Siraj Zaman, Ali Altamimi, Anthony Modica May 2019

Subscale Mars Colonization Mission, Cameron J. Lamack, James Lumsden, Sean Nevin, Donner Schoeffler, Riley Evers, Alexandra Poulakos, Skyler Tan, Anthony Keba, Siraj Zaman, Ali Altamimi, Anthony Modica

Honors Thesis

The team will compete in the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Aero Design West Advanced Class competition, held 5-7th April 2019 in Van Nuys, California. The team will work to develop, through research, design, optimizational trade studies, and manufacturing, a system for the deployment of parasitic aircraft, as well as payload. The system will consist of a primary fixed-wing aircraft, parasitic autonomous gliders, a real-time altitude data acquisition system, as well as both static and releasable payload. The deployable gliders must navigate autonomously to a targeting area on the ground without any on-board propulsion. The releasable payload, which will consist …

Optimizing 3d Printed Prosthetic Hand And Simulator, Stephen Estelle Jan 2019

Optimizing 3d Printed Prosthetic Hand And Simulator, Stephen Estelle

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the position and use of an upper extremity prosthetic simulator on non-amputees. To see how a 3D printed prosthetic simulator can be optimized to serve the user correctly and accurately. In addition, this study examines the improvement of the Hosmer 5X Prosthetic Hook with the addition of newly designed trusses on to the prosthetic, as well as utilizing a new manufacturing method known as 3D printing. These topics are important because there is no standardized prosthetic simulator for schools and research facilities to use. Off the shelf prosthetic simulator cost upwards of …

Ascanius Project: Mech 401/402 Senior Capstone Experience, Ray H. Colquhoun, Joshua Solberg, Martin Tangari, Emanuel Di Stasio Apr 2016

Ascanius Project: Mech 401/402 Senior Capstone Experience, Ray H. Colquhoun, Joshua Solberg, Martin Tangari, Emanuel Di Stasio

Honors Thesis

This report describes the analysis, design, and test, and launch of a high power reusable rocket. The design goals were to reach a target altitude of 3000’, deploy a payload module containing an egg that can be safely recovered, and record flight video. The rocket was 62.13 in long fully assembled, had a dry mass of 2.764 kg (3.077 kg wet), and was propelled using an I-class solid fuel rocket motor (Cesaroni I-216-CL). The nose cone and tail cone were fabricated by the team from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) via wet layup and vacuum bagging. The fins were constructed …

Energy Analysis & Utility Cost Mitigation With Storage For Commercial Buildings In California, Eric Anthony Fleming Jan 2012

Energy Analysis & Utility Cost Mitigation With Storage For Commercial Buildings In California, Eric Anthony Fleming

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

While on a great precipice of emerging energy technologies, it is necessary to understand how these technologies are most effectively integrated into current end-user systems. At the moment,

36% of California’s energy consumption is demanded from the commercial buildings sector. This report investigates the nature of energy with the state of California through various sources and analysis techniques. Using specific weather and commercial building data, this paper also focuses on the analysis of Commercial Building energy demand modeling for the state’s sixteen weather zones. It is modeled using the Department of Energy’s tool: EnergyPlus and analysis is performed with R …
