Compression Molded Composite Component, Greg Hermansen, Larsson Johnson, Joanne Medrano, Kyle Hammell Dec 2016

Compression Molded Composite Component, Greg Hermansen, Larsson Johnson, Joanne Medrano, Kyle Hammell

Mechanical Engineering

The following final design report outlines the design and fabrication of a carbon fiber compression molded sunglasses case. It intends to guide the development of a future lab activity for a composites undergraduate course at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo. The activity aims to support an educational investigation in "out-of-autoclave" composites manufacturing methods, such as compression molding, which offer some key benefits over autoclave molding. The methodology behind the creation of a conceptual design, an initial prototype, and a final product is laid out in detail below.

Design For Manufacturability: Off-Road Toyota Bumper, Drew Donlon Jul 2016

Design For Manufacturability: Off-Road Toyota Bumper, Drew Donlon

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The purpose of this project is to design a new off-road bumper that is improved from the stock form of a 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner and a 1996-2004 Toyota Tacoma. The current state of the component is too weak to endure to off-road endeavors, and a kit bumper market is virtually untapped for these vehicles. The objectives of this project were met by redesigning the stock front bumper, conducting a finite element analysis on the model to test for strength, prototyping the bumper with CNC cut cardboard, and conducting a full cost analysis including the costs for waterjet and laser cutting …

Heat Generation In The Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element, Oscar O. Rodriguez, Juan Carbone, Arturo A. Fuentes, Robert E. Jones, Constantine Tarawneh Jun 2016

Heat Generation In The Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element, Oscar O. Rodriguez, Juan Carbone, Arturo A. Fuentes, Robert E. Jones, Constantine Tarawneh

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The main purpose of this ongoing study is to investigate the effect of heat generation within a railroad thermoplastic elastomer suspension element on the thermal behavior of the railroad bearing assembly. Specifically, the purpose of this project is to quantify the heat generated by cyclic loading of the elastomer suspension element as a function of load amplitude, loading frequency, and operating temperature. The contribution of the elastomer pad to the system energy balance is modeled using data from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of the specific materials in use for that part. DMA is a technique that is commonly used to …

Heteromorphic To Homeomorphic Shape Match Conversion Toward Fully Automated Mesh Morphing To Match Manufactured Geometry, Robert Ivan Yorgason Jun 2016

Heteromorphic To Homeomorphic Shape Match Conversion Toward Fully Automated Mesh Morphing To Match Manufactured Geometry, Robert Ivan Yorgason

Theses and Dissertations

The modern engineering design process includes computer software packages that require approximations to be made when representing geometries. These approximations lead to inherent discrepancies between the design geometry of a part or assembly and the corresponding manufactured geometry. Further approximations are made during the analysis portion of the design process. Manufacturing defects can also occur, which increase the discrepancies between the design and manufactured geometry. These approximations combined with manufacturing defects lead to discrepancies which, for high precision parts, such as jet engine compressor blades, can affect the modal analysis results. In order to account for the manufacturing defects during …

Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing, Micheal Santangelo Apr 2016

Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing, Micheal Santangelo

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Additive manufacturing is a rapidly developing technology which promises to drastically reduce the cost and waste associated with manufacturing parts. However, current systems of additive manufacturing used for creating metal parts which are suitable for use in the aerospace, automotive, and defense industries are complex, expensive, and not robust enough to produce a wide range of part features and geometries. A relatively new method, called wire arc additive manufacturing(WAAM) is a low cost option that can create parts which have a near-net shape, and only require a small amount of post processing before they are ready for use. This system, …

Manufacturing And Characterization Of Energetic Materials, Carlos Alberto Catzin Jan 2016

Manufacturing And Characterization Of Energetic Materials, Carlos Alberto Catzin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Few products take several years of research effort to be synthesize yet disintegrate in scarcely millionths of a second when used. Despite their short lifespan energetic materials, particularly high explosives, are in demand as never before by the Aerospace, Defense, Energy, Gas, Mining, and Oil Industry for their unique properties. One class of high explosives known as polymer bonded explosives (PBXs) are popularly used in a wide variety of applications ranging from solid rocket propellants to the main explosive charge in conventional ammunitions. A key characteristic behind the popularity of PBXs in comparison to other high explosives is their handling …

The Relationship Of Corporate Financial Performance And Innovation Among Manufacturing Industries, Charlaine T. Chong, Samantha R. Chua, Ma. Catrina S. Dy, Antonio Miguel E. Villavicencio Jan 2016

The Relationship Of Corporate Financial Performance And Innovation Among Manufacturing Industries, Charlaine T. Chong, Samantha R. Chua, Ma. Catrina S. Dy, Antonio Miguel E. Villavicencio

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Innovation is becoming a critical determinant of the survival and advancement of firms. Despite this realization, there is a dearth of literature that tackles the subject matter and its specific role in corporate settings remains vague. Using corporate data on East and Southeast Asian manufacturing firms from 2008 to 2013, this study aims to identify the impact of corporate financial performance on research and development (R&D) expenditure as a measure of innovation. On the whole, the researchers utilized random effects (REM) and fixed effects (FEM) models to establish the relationship between R&D and corporate performance. The researchers, then, identified the …
