"The use of a rod mill for producing manufactured sand is not a recent application. A Marcy Open End Rod Mill has been operating at the plant of the Sun Sand Company, Thayer, West Virginia, since 1925. In early 1940 an 8' x 12' rod mill of the open end type was installed at Shasta.
