Electrochemical And Surface Compositional Studies On Uranium Dioxide, Mayuri Razdan Dec 2013

Electrochemical And Surface Compositional Studies On Uranium Dioxide, Mayuri Razdan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis describes electrochemical and surface compositional studies performed on a number of simulated nuclear fuel (SIMFUEL) materials under conditions relevant to permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel in a geologic repository. This is important since a number of critical issues have been identified in the event of waste container failure. The research performed was mainly focused in three areas: (i) the influence of low pH on the surface chemistry of UO2, since acidity could develop within corrosion product deposits and flaws in the fuel; (ii) the combined influence of dissolved H2 and H2O2 …

Finite Element Analyses Of Single-Edge Bend Specimens For J-R Curve Development, Yifan Huang Sep 2013

Finite Element Analyses Of Single-Edge Bend Specimens For J-R Curve Development, Yifan Huang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The fracture toughness resistance curve such as the J-integral resistance curve (J-R curve) is widely used in the integrity assessment and strain-based design of energy pipelines with respect to planar defects (i.e. cracks). Two studies about the development of the J-R curve are carried out and reported in this thesis. In the first study, the plastic geometry factor, i.e. the ηpl factor, used to evaluate J in a J-R curve test based on the single-edge bend (SE(B)) specimen is developed based on the three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). The main …

Numerical Modeling Of Solidification Process And Prediction Of Mechanical Properties In Magnesium Alloys, Mehdi Farrokhnejad Aug 2013

Numerical Modeling Of Solidification Process And Prediction Of Mechanical Properties In Magnesium Alloys, Mehdi Farrokhnejad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A formulation used to simulate the solidification process of magnesium alloys is developed based upon the volume averaged finite volume method on unstructured collocated grids. To derive equations, a non-zero volume fraction gradient has been considered and resulting additional terms are well reasoned. For discretization the most modern approximations for gradient and hessians are used and novelties outlined. Structure-properties correlations are incorporated into the in-house code and the proposed formulation is tested for a wedge-shaped magnesium alloy casting. While the results of this study show a good agreement with the experimental data, it was concluded that a better understanding of …

Development Of Novel Nanomaterials For Lithium-Air And Sodium-Air Batteries, Yongliang Li Aug 2013

Development Of Novel Nanomaterials For Lithium-Air And Sodium-Air Batteries, Yongliang Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Lithium-air and sodium-air batteries are promising energy storage systems for future smart grids and electric vehicles due to their extremely high theoretical energy densities. However, electrode material development and architecture design for cathode as well as the battery cycleability are big challenges for these batteries. This research aims at developing various novel nanomaterials with desired morphology and structure as cathode materials for lithium-air and sodium-air batteries.

For lithium-air batteries, various carbon nanostructured cathodes were developed. They include: (1) Carbon black nanoparticles were treated under ammonia and carbon dioxide/hydrogen atmospheres and the surface area, porosity, defects, nitrogen-doping, and functional groups were …

Electrospinning Of Core-Shell Collagen Nanofibers, Ying Li Aug 2013

Electrospinning Of Core-Shell Collagen Nanofibers, Ying Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In tissue engineering, the scaffold plays a critical role in guiding and supporting cells to function and grow optimally. The electrospun nanofibrous scaffold can serve as a near ideal substrate for tissue engineering because it has high surface area and the three-dimensional interconnected porous network can enhance cell attachment and proliferation. Core-shell nanofibrous scaffolds produced with coaxial electrospinning allow bioactive molecule encapsulation to improve cell adhesion, mediate and promote the proper signaling among the cells for their functioning and growth. In the current study, core-shell collagen nanofibers were fabricated via coaxial electrospinning with horizontal and vertical configurations. Core-shell nanofibers with …

Micro-Mechanical Assessment Of The Local Plastic Strain Invoked During A Splined Mandrel Flow Forming Operation, Meysam Haghshenas Apr 2013

Micro-Mechanical Assessment Of The Local Plastic Strain Invoked During A Splined Mandrel Flow Forming Operation, Meysam Haghshenas

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Splined Mandrel Flow Forming (SMFF) is a metal spinning operation that involves the application of high multiaxial compressive stress states to invoke large plastic flow in the work piece. This allows for essentially one-step fabrication of complex internally-splined shapes. In this research project, the equivalent plastic strain, invoked throughout bcc (1020 steel) and fcc (5052 and 6061 aluminum alloys, pure copper, and 70/30 brass) samples, that were made by SMFF, was measured. The objective of the research were to measure the to obtain data on the effect of microstructure and mechanical parameters on the flow formability of ductile bcc and …

Process-Structure Relationships Of Magnesium Alloys, Arindam Banerjee Apr 2013

Process-Structure Relationships Of Magnesium Alloys, Arindam Banerjee

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This research study characterizes the effects of solidification conditions on the resulting microstructure of an AM60B magnesium alloy during the solidification cycle of the casting. Seventeen control points are chosen from different sections of an instrument panel beam casting and its centerline coordinates are located. These control points locations are then used by Meridian Lightweight Technology Inc. to run a simulation in a MAGMASoft casting software to obtain temperature-time specific data.

An exact analytical solution to the Stefan problem is used to compute the one dimensional heat transfer for a section of the casting and to calculate its temperature distribution …

Sol-Gel Derived Biodegradable And Bioactive Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Biomaterials For Bone Tissue Engineering, Bedilu A. Allo Apr 2013

Sol-Gel Derived Biodegradable And Bioactive Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Biomaterials For Bone Tissue Engineering, Bedilu A. Allo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Treatments of bone injuries and defects have been largely centered on replacing the lost bone with tissues of allogeneic or xenogeneic sources as well as synthetic bone substitutes, which in all lead to limited degree of structural and functional recovery. As a result, tissue engineering has emerged as a viable technology to regenerate the structures and therefore recover the functions of bone tissue rather than replacement alone. Hence, the current strategies of bone tissue engineering and regeneration rely on bioactive scaffolds to mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) as templates onto which cells attach, multiply, migrate and function.

In this …

Carbon Nitride And Conjugated Polymer Composite Materials, Josh Byers Mar 2013

Carbon Nitride And Conjugated Polymer Composite Materials, Josh Byers

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The semiconductor and photovoltaic properties of carbon nitride (CNx) thin films prepared using a reactive magnetron sputtering technique were investigated both individually and as composites with the organic conjugated polymers polybithiophene (PBT) and poly(3-hextlthiophene) (P3HT). At low nitrogen content, the film structure was dominated by graphitic sp2 percolation networks, whereas at higher nitrogen contents CNx films started to demonstrate semiconductor properties, as evidenced by the occurrence of photoconductivity and the development of a space charge region. When CNx was deposited onto a PBT substrate, it was found to function as an acceptor material improving the photocurrent generation both in …
