During the past two decades, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained great success in the field of portable devices, and currently, are penetrating to the market of vehicles. Compared to the fast development of LIBs, little efforts have been dedicated to the separator, which is one of the most important components of LIBs. Primarily, the lithium-ion battery separator has two functions, one is to prevent direct contact between the positive and negative electrodes, and the other is to provide a path for effective ionic transportation. Currently, the separator market of LIBs is dominated by polyolefin materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and …

The Modification Of A Curtain Coating Formulation: A Study Of Rheology And Surface Tension, And Their Effect On Pitting, Samantha Leigh Schoenfelder Jun 2017

The Modification Of A Curtain Coating Formulation: A Study Of Rheology And Surface Tension, And Their Effect On Pitting, Samantha Leigh Schoenfelder

Masters Theses

When an undisclosed recycled fiber mill installed a “two-slotted” curtain coater to replace their air knife coater, a prominent defect arose known as “pitting,” which is also called pinholing or cratering. Pitting occurs when the coating of the sheet has small holes that mar its surface, which, when clustered together or larger in size, can cause print breakup during the printing process.

Through research, pitting is known to be caused by a boundary layer of air that gets laterally pulled in between the coating and board during their initial contact. Thus, rheological properties and the surface tension of the curtain …

Minimization Of Metamerism In Wood Grain Printing Using Different Gcr Settings, Vinay Anil Turke

Masters Theses

In printing industry, prototyping is necessary to ensure quality reproduction of jobs. Conventional printing processes like gravure cannot be used for prototyping because of high manufacturing cost of gravure cylinders. Such challenges can be successfully tackled by use of relatively cheap and flexible printing processes, such as inkjet. Even though inkjet printing is a cost effective way for prototyping, it has its own limitations, especially in the case of woodgrain printing. Wood-grain patterns need to be printed with a release coating and adhesive. Inkjet printers are incapable of printing release coating and adhesive because release coat and adhesive require certain …

Oxidized Phospholipids Regulation Of The Monocyte Recruitment Parthway In Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Piao Jian Tan Aug 2015

Oxidized Phospholipids Regulation Of The Monocyte Recruitment Parthway In Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Piao Jian Tan

Masters Theses

Low-density lipoprotein particles in blood plasma invade the endothelium and become oxidized, creating risk of CHD associated with atherosclerosis, the main underlying condition in coronary heart disease. Oxidation products of the phospholipid 1-palmitoyl- 2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine (PAPC) are bioactive components of minimally oxidized LDL that stimulate endothelial cells that line the artery, leading to monocyte binding and atherosclerosis. It is hypothesized that the regulation of the monocyte recruitment pathway by these oxidized phospholipids is mediated by the binding of OxPAPC to one or more mediating proteins. Human recombinant VEGFR2, GRP78, and EP2bind to OxPNB, a biotinylated analog of OxPAPC, demonstrated using Western …

Self-Supported Printed Multi-Layer Capacitors, Michael James Joyce Aug 2014

Self-Supported Printed Multi-Layer Capacitors, Michael James Joyce

Masters Theses

The increasing demand for miniaturized electronic devices has increased the need for rechargeable micro-power sources. Although lithium and lithium ion batteries have been utilized in these applications since the late 1990s, other energy harvesting technologies, such as thermal, mechanical, and solar, are now being used to augment batteries to enable systems to be self-powered. However, the lifetime of any battery is finite, which may be a major problem when the application is in a permanent structure or medical implant device. For power or significant energy storage applications, printed multilayer capacitors or supercapacitors are being explored as an enhancement, or replacement …

Lateral Migration Of A Solid Particle In Shear Flow, Wutthapong Jiraporncharoen Dec 2001

Lateral Migration Of A Solid Particle In Shear Flow, Wutthapong Jiraporncharoen

Masters Theses

Lateral migration of solid particles in shear flow is observed in various industrial applications. Suspensions in a blade coater, a device used to apply coating pigment to a base paper to improve paper properties, is an example. Particle hydrodynamics will affect the quality of coated paper and runnability of the coater especially when the speed of the coating machine is very high or the pigment concentration is increased.

Many factors will affect the particle migration. The wall repulsion or lubrication effect forces the particle away from a wall to the channel center. The inertial effects are increased by increasing the …

An Analysis Of Texture Resulting From Thermomechanical Processing Of Ti-6al-V, David J. Brock Dec 1998

An Analysis Of Texture Resulting From Thermomechanical Processing Of Ti-6al-V, David J. Brock

Masters Theses

An investigation of texture and microstructure formation in Ti-6Al-4V after thermomechanical processing and heat treating was performed. X-ray diffraction was used to measure prismatic and pyramidal pole figures. These pole figures were used to calculate basal pole figures, which showed significant changes in texture from heavy rolling and near or above β-transus heat treatments. Primary texture components were found to be strengthened by near β-transus heat treatments. For heavily rolled material, above β-transus heat treatments were found to reverse the primary texture components order of dominants. Heavy rolling was found to reduce the RD component and strengthen the TD.

Effect Of Poly Acrylate Addition On Coating Color Rheology, Water Retention And Coating Performance, Shambhu Nath Aug 1994

Effect Of Poly Acrylate Addition On Coating Color Rheology, Water Retention And Coating Performance, Shambhu Nath

Masters Theses

Five polyacrylate samples were used to study their effects on coating color rheology, water holding and runnability. The Cylindrical Laboratory Coater was used to apply the coatings and study the runnability of the coating colors. The healing tendencies of the coatings were studied by inducing a scratch under the blade. The higher acid level and degree of crosslinking of the polyacrylate gave higher viscosity and the higher acid level also gave higher water retention. Coating colors containing polyacrylates were less prone to dilatancy at high shear. The addition of polyacrylate reduced the healing of coating colors, but for the same …

Optimization Of Sodium Carbonate-Sodium Hydroxide Pulping Of Wheat Straw For Corrugating Medium Production, Irmak Yayin Apr 1992

Optimization Of Sodium Carbonate-Sodium Hydroxide Pulping Of Wheat Straw For Corrugating Medium Production, Irmak Yayin

Masters Theses

This study's primary objective was to present sodium carbonate pulping as an alternative to soda or lime pulping of wheat straw for corrugating medium production. If sodium carbonate pulping is comparable with soda pulping in terms of strength properties, it could be the preference of choice because the recovery of sodium carbonate is simpler requiring less capital investment. The two strength properties that were optimized with respect to total chemical charge, cooking time, and sodium hydroxide fraction in the cooking liquor were Concora crush resistance and STFI compressive strength. These are the two most important strength properties for the end …

An Experimental Investigation Of Bevelled Blade Coating For Paper, Mustafa Naci Altug Dec 1991

An Experimental Investigation Of Bevelled Blade Coating For Paper, Mustafa Naci Altug

Masters Theses

In this study the total dynamic force (TDF) acting on the blade was determined at three different web speeds. The objective was to compare quantitatively the experimental results with the predictions of existing models to show whether or not any of these models predict coat weight development. The existing models include the lubrication theory, impact model, lateral force, and combinations of these models.

Under the conditions investigated, the estimated TDF was in good agreement only with the impact force (sum of impulse and hydrodynamic forces) model of blade coating. The impulse force accounted for 94% of the TDF and, therefore, …

The Relationship Of Pore Volume And Pore Size Distribution To The Development Of Gloss And Scattering Coefficient, John A. Cook Jun 1988

The Relationship Of Pore Volume And Pore Size Distribution To The Development Of Gloss And Scattering Coefficient, John A. Cook

Masters Theses

This study describes in a quantitative manner the relationships between coating structure and optical properties. Gloss, scattering coefficient and void volume were measured after applying different blends of polystyrene spheres to mylar film. Each coating was modeled using large spherical particles of the same size ratios to measure pore size distribution. The coating structure followed well with theoretical packing characteristics of spheres. Optical properties were related to changes in coating structure. Scattering coefficient and gloss correlated better with pore size distribution than particle size. Gloss increased when total void volume was reduced, while the scattering coefficient decreased.

A Dynamic Study Of The Effect Of Cationic Starch Molecular Weight And Charge On Filler And Fines Flocculation, Deflocculation, And Reflocculation, Bob Shian-Hou Ching

Masters Theses

A modified laboratory instrument was used to dynamically monitor the flocculation of fines and filler under various shear conditions on the "seconds" basis. A three-way factorial design and ANOVA were used to evaluate the significance of cationio starch molecular weight and charge in affecting fines and filler flocculation, deflocculation, and reflocculation. The reduction of molecular weight under high shear was suggested by the results. Both main effects and interaction effects of charge and molecular weight were important in determining flocculation. Charge was the only significant factor for the reflocculation process. Molecular weight was more important than charge in imparting shear …
