This Article Explores the Prospects of using Spatially Distributed Optical Fiber Temperature Sensors based on Rayleigh Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) Technology in the Continuous Casting of Molten Steel. the Measurement Capability of the Optical Fiber Sensors in a Simulated Steelmaking Environment Was Demonstrated using a Mock Refractory-Lined Tundish, Which Was Fabricated In-House. Single-Mode Optical Fibers, Contained in Protective Stainless-Steel Tubing, Were Embedded in the Refractory Lining of the Mock Tundish. the Instrumented Tundish Was Preheated Up to a Temperature of 960 °C (Recorded at the Surface of the Working Lining) Before the Molten Steel Pour. a Low-Alloy Steel (AISI …
Oxide Inclusion Evolution And Factors That Influence Their Size And Morphology, Obinna M. Adaba
Oxide Inclusion Evolution And Factors That Influence Their Size And Morphology, Obinna M. Adaba
Doctoral Dissertations
"The evolution of oxide inclusion size distribution and the shape of the distribution during steelmaking and casting and the process variables that influence the inclusion characteristics at different stages were investigated and documented. A statistical method for transforming the 2D size distribution to their actual 3D distributions and the application of a kinetic model to determine nucleation and growth mechanisms were tested. Finally, laboratory experiments were performed to study the effects of preexisting inclusions, steel active oxygen content, and supersaturation on the size and morphology of Al2O3 inclusions.
The inclusion size, composition, and morphology following steel deoxidation …

Investigations into the evolution of inclusion populations during ladle processing and continuous casting are reviewed. Details of the steelmaking practices employed in BOP and EAF steelmaking have been observed to have a strong influence on the size distribution, quantity, composition, phases and morphology of the final inclusion population delivered to the caster. Examples of the effects of different processing paths on the evolution of inclusion populations are presented. The importance of preexisting inclusion populations on the formation and removal of new inclusion populations is also reviewed and discussed.
Inclusion Engineering In Mn-Si De-Oxidized Steel For Thin-Strip Casting, Vivek Thapliyal
Inclusion Engineering In Mn-Si De-Oxidized Steel For Thin-Strip Casting, Vivek Thapliyal
Doctoral Dissertations
"The focus of this research was to understand inclusion formation and evolution in Mn-Si de-oxidized steels used in thin-strip casting. Inclusions formation and evolution in ultra-low carbon low-alloyed steels were studied. Inclusion engineering can be used to remove or modify detrimental inclusions, which cause casting issues.
The first part of this study focused on inclusion formation as a result of ferro-alloy addition. De-oxidation reaction in steels are the primary source of the typical oxide inclusion formed in steel. For Mn-Si de-oxidized steels ferro-silicon and ferro-manganese are the two ferro-alloys used for de-oxidation. Inclusion formation and evolution during the early stages …

Alloy recovery plays an important role in steel melting economics because the cost of alloying additives such as ferroalloys and pure non-ferrous metals is significantly higher than the cost of steel scrap. Recovery of alloying additives also influences the reproducibility of steel properties from heat to heat. This paper reviews alloy recovery and final chemistry distributions at seven steel foundries and preliminary laboratory studies of alloy dissolution in ladles. Melting and alloy practices were observed for several plant trial heats in each of the foundries. Alloying and chemistry data were collected for an additional 20 - 155 heats at each …

This paper summarizes the findings from a study of melting efficiency in steel foundries and provides examples of material and energy savings from improvements in technology and melting practices. This study is based on information gathered at 19 Steel Founders Society of America member foundries and includes a combination of historical data and industrial measurements by the research team. Information and data were collected on the type of melting equipment, melting practices, energy use and ladle practices. The data was statistically analyzed using STATGRAPHICS commercial software. A multiple regression analysis allowed evaluation of the influence of the melting furnace (type, …
