Characterization And Modeling Of Local Electromechanical Response In Stress-Biased Piezoelectric Actuators, N. Navapan-Traiphol, Robert W. Schwartz, Daniel S. Stutts, J. Wood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Numerous investigators have explored the factors that contribute to the high electromechanical performance of stress-biased actuators with particular attention being given to the importance of the extrinsic (domain wall translation) response mechanism. Based on the variation in lateral stress through the thickness of the piezoelectric layer within these devices, it has been suggested that the piezoelectric coefficient varies as a function of position within the layer, though no direct evidence has been previously presented. In this study, the results of Moire interferometry investigations of local strains within these devices are reviewed. The technique permits effective depth-profiling of local deformations at …

Optical limiting effects in SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) and PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT) ferroelectric thin films have been observed with nanosecond laser pulses at 1.064 µm. Limiting thresholds were found to be 5.84 J/cm2 for SBT and between 4.53 and 5.93 J/cm2 for PZT, depending on composition, whereas saturation thresholds for the films were about 2.92 J/cm2 and between 2.27 J/cm2 to 2.97 J/cm2, respectively. Damage thresholds around 10.0 J/cm2 and between 10.37 J/cm2 to 10.54 J/cm2, respectively for SBT and PZT, were also determined. A possible mechanism for the observed limiting, nonlinear optical scattering from the ferroelectric domains, is discussed. These results elucidate …

Mixed Electron Emission From Lead Zirconate-Titanate Ceramics, Weiming Zhang, Wayne Huebner, Stephen E. Sampayan, Mike L. Krogh Jun 1998

Simultaneous ferroelectric and plasma emission from Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 was observed with only a negative driving pulse applied to the sample, and without an extraction potential on the electron collector. Plasma emission was a strong, inconsistent, and self-destructive process. In addition, a positive ion current was detected. Comparatively, ferroelectric emission was a relatively stable self-emission process, exhibiting no apparent delay time, and no positive ion current. The relationship between the switching and emission current of ferroelectric samples measured simultaneously cannot only be used to determine the existence of ferroelectric emission, but can also give direction to choosing suitable ferroelectric materials for …

Fabrication Of 2-2 Connectivity Pzt/Thermoplastic Composites For High Frequency Linear Arrays, Wayne Huebner, Mary R. Reidmeyer, L. Busse, Jeffry W. Stevenson Jan 1994

Fabrication Of 2-2 Connectivity Pzt/Thermoplastic Composites For High Frequency Linear Arrays, Wayne Huebner, Mary R. Reidmeyer, L. Busse, Jeffry W. Stevenson

An alternate approach for fabricating PZT/polymer composites with 2-2 connectivity with fine scales is described. Thin (less than or equal to 20 micrometers) sintered PZT plates and sheets of a thermoplastic polymer film (less than or equal to 10 micrometers) were bonded together via thermal processing. Stack sintering of tape cast PZT generated the necessary PZT plates, while tape cast polymers were used to control the thermoplastic thickness. Composite blocks were cut to required dimensions for linear arrays, electroded, and poled. Electromechanical properties were measured to evaluate the composites. The significance of this fabrication technique is that it is able …

The densification behavior a PZT-based composition with additions of BiFeO3 as a flux was studied. Two different PZT powders were studied with varying initial particle sizes. Results clearly showed that BiFeO3 forms a low temperature liquid that aids in the densification behavior, with 3 mole% being optimum. Fine particle sizes substantially improved the density at low temperatures, with the net result that ceramics could be densified in air without the aid of a lead source. The corresponding electromechanical properties were typical of a hard PZT formulation.

Processing And Characterization Of Samarium And Manganese Modified Lead Titanate Thin Film, Chen-Lung Fan, Wayne Huebner Jan 1994

Processing And Characterization Of Samarium And Manganese Modified Lead Titanate Thin Film, Chen-Lung Fan, Wayne Huebner

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Samarium and manganese modified lead titanate thin films were fabricated by spin-coating an amorphous citrate precursor. These films transformed into an oxide film upon heat treatment at 400 degrees Celcius or above. Relatively large area and crack-free thin films could be obtained by this process both easily and inexpensively. The rheological behavior of the precursor solution, as well as its thermal decomposition and phase development were studied by means of DSC/TGA and XRD. The thickness and grain size of the oxide film were examined by TEM and SEM.

Lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - PbTiO3 (PT) solid solutions have been widely researched to produce devices that can be used in low- and high-electric-field applications. For some applications, such as medical ultrasonic transducers, it is necessary to prepare the ceramic with high density and small average grain size. The effect of grain size on the low- and high-field properties of 0.9-PMN-0.10-PT ceramics is described in the present work. To prepare highly dense ceramic, vibratory and attrition milled powders were sintered between 1000 and 1250 ⁰C. The average grain sizes of the sintered ceramics …
