During the Coptic period in Fayum Egypt, encaustic (i.e. wax) mummy portraits were painted onto wooden panels or linen and attached to the mummy trappings of the deceased. One such portrait, “32.6: The Bearded Man” (c. 170-180 AD), features an unidentified Roman-Egyptian displaying a purple clavi. The trace swath of purple in the portrait provides evidence as to the origins of the painting and the identity of the man. Nanoscale analysis of the pigment suggests a red organic material was color shifted using a metal salt to produce a “poor man’s purple” as opposed to the expensive murex purple traditionally …

Revealing Student Misconceptions And Instructor Blind Spots With Muddiest Point Formative Feedback, Cindy Waters, Stephen J. Krause, Janet Callahan, Barry Dupen, Mary B. Vollaro, Peggie Weeks Oct 2016

Revealing Student Misconceptions And Instructor Blind Spots With Muddiest Point Formative Feedback, Cindy Waters, Stephen J. Krause, Janet Callahan, Barry Dupen, Mary B. Vollaro, Peggie Weeks

Janet M. Callahan

Of interest to all engineering disciplines, well-designed formative feedback has the potential to enhance both instructor teaching and student learning. Delivering fundamental courses year after year, can ultimately lead faculty to use stale notes or slides from past years. This approach may save time, but does not meet the shifting needs of our students who have high expectations from their instructors. One simple method to improve teaching is to employ muddiest point reflections. Muddiest point reflections involve simply asking students to anonymously reflect on what was “muddy”, i.e. confusing, during class and to rank their level of confusion which not …

Negotiation is an important skill for faculty at all stages of their career, but one that research suggests is often uncomfortable for women faculty to employ. This paper focuses on the topic of negotiation, with an emphasis on providing practical ideas and strategies relevant to academic professionals at both entry-level and mid-career who find that they need to negotiate a career opportunity. The paper will review negotiation basics, as well as discuss what can be negotiated, how one might proceed to discuss these, and how listening is critical to negotiation. By viewing negotiation as a "wise agreement"1 that seeks to …

Analysis Of Corrosion-Induced Diffusion Layer In Zk60a Magnesium Alloy.Pdf, Shumin Li Oct 2016

Analysis Of Corrosion-Induced Diffusion Layer In Zk60a Magnesium Alloy.Pdf, Shumin Li

Shumin Li

Corrosion-induced damage in ZK60A magnesium alloy is analyzed via chemo-mechanical tests. A certain “diffusion” corrosion layer (DCL) is identified, where partial corrosion takes place. This layer is different from the corrosion product layer (CPL). Nanoindentation analysis shows that corrosion modifies mechanical properties in the DCL, which extends up to 8–9 micrometers into the bulk, away from the CPL. Measurements over the DCL indicate a lower elastic modulus and lower fracture toughness compared with the bulk, as well as higher variance (heterogeneity). Elemental analysis confirms the layer is composed of partially oxidized magnesium and diffused chloride ions. Gradual changes in mechanical …

Silicon-based nanoparticles are ideally suited for use as biomedical imaging agents due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and simple surface chemistry that facilitates drug loading and targeting. A method of hyperpolarizing silicon particles using dynamic nuclear polarization, which increases magnetic resonance imaging signals by several orders-of-magnitude through enhanced nuclear spin alignment, has recently been developed to allow silicon particles to function as contrast agents for in vivo magnetic resonance imaging. The enhanced spin polarization of silicon lasts significantly longer than other hyperpolarized agents (tens of minutes, whereas <1  min for other species at room temperature), allowing a wide range of potential …

Modeling Noise Coupling Between Package And Pcb Power/Ground Planes With An Efficient 2-D Fdtd/Lumped Element Method, Ting-Kuang Wang, Sin-Ting Chen, Chi-Wei Tsai, Sung-Mao Wu, James L. Drewniak, Tzong-Lin Wu

James K. Wu, M.D.

An efficient numerical approach based on the 2-D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed to model the power/ground plane noise or simultaneously switching noise (SSN), including the interconnect effect between the package and the print circuit board (PCB). The space between the power and ground planes on the package and PCB are meshed with 2-D cells. The equivalent R-L-C circuits of the via and the solder balls connecting the package and PCB can be incorporated into a 2-D Yee cell based on a novel integral formulation in the time domain. An efficient recursive updating algorithm is proposed to fit the …

Numerical Modeling Of Periodic Composite Media For Electromagnetic Shielding Application, Dagang Wu, Rui Qiang, Ji Chen, Ce Liu, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, Bruce Archambeault Jul 2016

Numerical Modeling Of Periodic Composite Media For Electromagnetic Shielding Application, Dagang Wu, Rui Qiang, Ji Chen, Ce Liu, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, Bruce Archambeault

James K. Wu, M.D.

This paper describes a methodology to extract effective electrical properties for periodic composite medium. The extraction algorithm is based on a periodic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results are compared with conventional mixing theories and 3D Fourier series expansion methods. Two results show satisfactory agreement. With the extracted effective permittivity and conductivity, one can readily use these parameters to study electrical properties of composite materials with arbitrary micro-geometry and the shielding effects of using composite materials.

Characterizing Package/Pcb Pdn Interactions From A Full-Wave Finite-Difference Formulation, Shishuang Sun, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak, Kai Xiao, Sin-Ting Chen, Tzong-Lin Wu

James K. Wu, M.D.

A novel approach of equivalent circuit model extraction is developed for modeling of integrated package and PCB power distribution networks (PDN). The integrated PDNs are formulated from a full-wave finite-difference algorithm, and the resulting matrix equations are converted to equivalent circuits. The equivalent circuits, as well as the decoupling capacitors and the attached circuit components, can be analyzed with a SPICE-like solver in both the time and frequency domains. The modeling of dielectric loss is also addressed. The method is used to model three PDN problems including a simple power bus, a BGA package mounting on a PCB, and a …

Carbon Nanoadditives To Enhance Latent Energy Storage Of Phase Change Materials, Shadab Shaikh, Khalid Lafdi, Kevin P. Hallinan Jun 2016

Carbon Nanoadditives To Enhance Latent Energy Storage Of Phase Change Materials, Shadab Shaikh, Khalid Lafdi, Kevin P. Hallinan

Kevin Hallinan

Latent energy storage capacity was analyzed for a system consisting of carbon nanoparticlesdopedphase changematerials (PCMs). Three types of samples were prepared by doping shell wax with single wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs), multiwall CNTs, and carbon nanofibers. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the latent heat of fusion. The measured values of latent heat for all the samples showed a good enhancement over the latent heat of pure wax. A maximum enhancement of approximately 13% was observed for the wax/SWCNT composite corresponding to 1% loading of SWCNT. The change in latent heat was modeled by using an approximation for the intermolecular …

Fabrication Of Micro-Meltblown Filtration Media Using Parallel Plate Die Design, Mohammad A. Hassan Jan 2016

Fabrication Of Micro-Meltblown Filtration Media Using Parallel Plate Die Design, Mohammad A. Hassan

Mohammad Abouelreesh Hassan

Meltblown fibers are typically produced using a die technology based on the slot concept, an extension of the sheet die technology with a series of holes substituting the center rectangular slot of the sheet die. While this prevalent technology has met with considerable success, an economical, facile design would be desirable. In this study a new parallel plate die concept to fabricate micro-meltblown fibers that offers simplicity, ease of use, and low cost was examined. The new die concept had parallel plates forming channels for polymer melt to flow through with a set of air holes surrounding them. This die …
