Extruded Aquafeeds Containing Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles: Effects On Extrudate Properties And Processing Behaviour, Kamal Mjoun, Kurt A. Rosentrater

BACKGROUND: The tremendous supply and low cost of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) make it an attractive feedstuff for aquaculture diets. Also, several studies have shown that DDGS can be successfully fed to various finfish. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of inclusion rate of DDGS (0, 250, 500 g kg−1), feed moisture content (350, 450 g kg−1) and die opening area (die A = 18.85 mm2, die B = 3988.45 mm2) on the properties of the extrudates and on processing behaviour using a single-screw extruder.

RESULTS: Increasing the inclusion rate of DDGS resulted in …

With the remarkable growth of the US fuel ethanol industry in the past decade, large quantities of corn-based distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are now being produced. Flowability of DDGS has become a problem throughout the industry, as it is often restricted by caking and bridging during storage and transport. The objective of this study was to quantify physical and flow properties of commercially produced unmodified (9.3% db fat) and reduced fat (2.1% db) DDGS to determine if fat level affects flowability. The compressive modulus of reduced fat DDGS was 28.2% higher than unmodified DDGS, but shear stress resistance …

Extrusion trials were conducted with varying levels of DDGS along with soy flour, corn flour, fish meal, vitamin mix, mineral mix and net protein content adjusted to 28% in a Wenger TX-52 twin screw extruder. The properties of extrudates obtained with experiments conducted in full factorial design with 3 levels of DDGS content, 2 levels of moisture content and 2 levels of screw speed were studied. Increasing the DDGS content from 20% to 60%, resulted in 36.7% decrease in the radial expansion leading to 159%, 61.4% increase in the unit density and bulk density of the extrudates. Increasing the DDGS …

Ingredient blends containing 28% protein with distillers dried grains with solubles, soy flour, corn flour, fish meal, mineral mix and vitamin mix was extruded in a C.W. Brabender single screw laboratory extruder using 7 different die nozzles. The die nozzle diameter (D), length (L) and L/D ratio of the dies were in the range of 2.0 mm to 6.0 mm, 10.0 mm to 30.0 mm and 3.33 to 10.00, respectively. The moisture content of the ingredient mix was varied from 15% to 25% and the temperature of the transition zone and die section were varied from 100° C to 140°C. …

With the rapid growth in the fuel ethanol industry in recent years, considerable research is being devoted to determining distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) nutritional properties and to optimizing their inclusion in livestock diets; physical properties of these materials, however, have been largely ignored. Using standard laboratory methods, several physical properties for typical DDGS streams were determined, including moisture content, water activity, thermal properties (conductivity, resistivity, and diffusivity), bulk density, angle of repose, and color. The DDGS samples in this study were golden-brown in color and exhibited physical properties similar to other dry feed ingredients, such as hominy feed, …

Protein-rich distillers dried grains (DDG) from ethanol plants has been used as livestock feed for many years. Feed conversion efficiency in fish, however, is typically much higher compared to traditional livestock. But, the cost of fish feed is one of the challenges for profitable fish cultivation. Due to the exponential growth of ethanol plants in recent years, DDG is becoming readily available as a reasonably-priced base material for animal feeds, and because it has a relatively high protein content, it also has much potential for use as a fish feed ingredient. Even though much literature is available on conversion of …
