Effects Of Varying Cds, Drying And Cooling Temperatures On Glass Transition Temperature Of Ddgs, Rumela Bhadra, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan

Kurt A. Rosentrater

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a co product of the corn-based fuel ethanol industry, is used widely as an animal feed. Due to increased demand for DDGS in livestock markets it has become essential to transport DDGS over long distances. Flowability problems in DDGS, due to particle caking, often create nuisance in storage and transportation. Materials above the glass transition temperature (Tg) can exist in a “rubbery state,” this condition can often be responsible for structural collapse, particle agglomeration, and caking of materials. This study investigated the effects of varying CDS (10, 15, and 20%, wb), drying (100, 200, …

Measurement Of Sticky Point Temperature Of Coffee Powder With A Rheometer, Rumela Bhadra, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan Aug 2009

Measurement Of Sticky Point Temperature Of Coffee Powder With A Rheometer, Rumela Bhadra, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan

Sticky point temperature (Ts) measurement for hygroscopic food and biomaterial powders is traditionally performed with complex glass instruments. This property is used to characterize material stickiness, which substantially affects the flow and physical behavior of powders. In this research study we developed a new methodology to measure sticky point temperature using a rheometer, and validated our Ts data with previously published coffee powder data. Our Ts measurement using a rheometer was performed in two replications. The behavior of Ts as a function of moisture content (%, db) was observed to be non-linear. After 16% (db) moisture content, however, there were …

Understanding And Modeling Flowability Of Ddgs, Rumela Bhadra, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan Jun 2008

Understanding And Modeling Flowability Of Ddgs, Rumela Bhadra, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), the major coproduct from the corn-based fuel ethanol industry, is primarily used as livestock feed. Due to high protein, fiber, and energy contents, there is a high demand for DDGS. Flowability of DDGS is often hindered due the phenomenon of “caking”. Shipping and handling of DDGS has thus become a major issue due to bridge formation between the DDGS particles. The objective of this investigation was to measure flowability characteristics of DDGS samples from five ethanol plants in the north central region of the U.S. Carr and Jenike tests were performed, and the resulting …

Effect Of Moisture Content And Soluble Levels On The Physical And Chemical Properties Of Ddgs, Vykundeshwari Ganesan, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan, Kurt A. Rosentrater Jul 2005

Effect Of Moisture Content And Soluble Levels On The Physical And Chemical Properties Of Ddgs, Vykundeshwari Ganesan, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan, Kurt A. Rosentrater

Over the past few decades, researches concerning handling and storage characteristics of bulk solids have been conducted to a large extent. Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) are a bulk material that has been widely used as a protein source for ruminants and non-ruminants for more than two decades. Distillers’ grains are energy dense as they contain high fat levels. With the exponential growth of the fuel ethanol industry in the past several years, significant quantities of distiller’s grains are now being produced. To effectively utilize these feeds in the domestic market, however, these coproduct streams are increasingly being transported …

Flowability And Handling Characteristics Of Bulk Solids And Powders—A Review, Vykundeshwari Ganesan, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan, Kurt A. Rosentrater Jun 2005

Flowability And Handling Characteristics Of Bulk Solids And Powders—A Review, Vykundeshwari Ganesan, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan, Kurt A. Rosentrater

Much research regarding handling and storage characteristics of bulk solids has been conducted over the years. Physical properties of granular solids play a significant role in their resulting flow and storage behavior, and are therefore essential to design appropriate, efficient, and economic bulk solids handling and storage equipment and structures.
