Traditional learning and teaching methods for creativity differ from those used in a scientific context. Although the creative process can benefit from a certain level of prescription and structural constraint - with time allocated to research, problem definition, conceptualisation and idea development - flexibility and fluidity are necessary for creative innovation. In contrast, the more linear and rigid pedagogies associated with science and engineering education facilitate efficient learning of subjects such as those based on software packages, manufacturing and materials theory or mechanics. This paper describes the development of a project which aims to establish constructive links between the learning …
The Role Of Personality And Team-Based Product Dissection On Fixation Effects, Christine A. Toh, Scarlett R. Miller, Gül E. Okudan Kremer
The Role Of Personality And Team-Based Product Dissection On Fixation Effects, Christine A. Toh, Scarlett R. Miller, Gül E. Okudan Kremer

D esign fixation has been found to be complex in its definition and expression, but it plays an important role in design idea generation. Identifying the factors that influence fixation is crucial in understanding how to enhance the design process and reduce the negative effects of fixation. One way to potentially mitigate fixation is through product dissection activities since this activity has been shown to increase creativity and design space exploration in engineering design. However, product dissection has not been studied in the context of design fixation, so it is unclear if, or how, this type of activity influences fixation. …

How To Transition Patent Drawings Into Persuasive Courtroom Exhibits, Bernadette Marshall
How To Transition Patent Drawings Into Persuasive Courtroom Exhibits, Bernadette Marshall
Bernadette Marshall
We want you to get the most out of your patent drawings. In this edition we will discuss the role of patent drawings in litigation and how they can be used to create or enhance persuasive litigation graphics. Whether you are pursuing an infringer or defending your patent, drawings can help educate a judge or jury. Simple, clear and accurate images can often help you win the day. Whether deciding on what damages are appropriate or if in settlement negotiations, a well-defined patent enables the owner to negotiate for the best result possible.
International Harmonization Of Substantive Patent Law - What Does It Mean For Patent Drawings?, Bernadette Marshall
International Harmonization Of Substantive Patent Law - What Does It Mean For Patent Drawings?, Bernadette Marshall

Among others, the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) is moving towards harmonizing patent standards. Many rules for patent drawings have already been revised to correspond with those of the European Patent Office (EPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The rule change to make computer generated drawings permissible, provided they are executed in a manner that permits clear reproduction and copying, we feel makes perfect sense.
Environmentally Friendly Sizing Agent From Corn Distillers Dried Grains, Yue Zhang
Environmentally Friendly Sizing Agent From Corn Distillers Dried Grains, Yue Zhang
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Distillers dried grains (DDGS), the coproducts of corn ethanol production, were used as a textile sizing agent on cotton, polyester and polyester/cotton blends in an effort to find inexpensive and biodegradable alternatives to sizing agents such as poly(vinyl alcohol) that are currently used. Although DDGS is an inexpensive, biodegradable and abundant co-product, it has limited industrial applications. DDGS is a mixture of carbohydrates, proteins and oil which are used as sizing agents or as size additives. The effects of DDGS extraction conditions on sizing evaluation parameters such as fiber adhesion, film properties, viscosity and fabric abrasion were studied in comparison …
Carrying Oxygen, Jaimie Gerst
Carrying Oxygen, Jaimie Gerst
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Carrying oxygen is a daily struggle for many who are constant oxygen users. From the moment of prescription to continuous portable oxygen therapy, ones life has changed. Every time an individual has to leave their home, they depend on having their form of portable oxygen therapy with them, in addition to other necessary items needed throughout the day.
Currently, many oxygen carriers do not fit the needs of their user. After talking to people using oxygen, doctors, distributers, and therapists, it became clear that there are several issues with current oxygen tanks and carriers. Oxygen cylinders are predominantly used because …
How Much Should You Pay For Patent Drawings?, Bernadette Marshall
How Much Should You Pay For Patent Drawings?, Bernadette Marshall
Bernadette Marshall
How much should you pay for patent drawings? There is no set rate or price for patent drawings because prices are set by the market. Prices vary with the complexity and timing of drawings and reference materials supplied. The highest price is no guarantee of the best quality. Those in the market for patent drawings are wise to shop for the best quality at a competitive price.
Integrating Emotional Attachment And Sustainability In Electronic Product Design, Alex Lobos, Callie W. Babbitt
Integrating Emotional Attachment And Sustainability In Electronic Product Design, Alex Lobos, Callie W. Babbitt

Current models for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products encourage frequent product replacement with newer versions that offer only minor incremental improvements. This pattern, named planned obsolescence, diminishes user experience and shortens product lifespan. This paper presents the conceptual basis for a two-part integrated approach to combating planned obsolescence in ICT devices. First, design for emotional attachment, which creates products that users enjoy, value, and use for longer. Second, technological adaptability, which anticipates product upgrades and repairs as new technologies emerge. A model interdisciplinary design course in industrial design and sustainability, also described herein, trains students to apply this approach …
Why Patent Drawings Get Rejected Part2, Bernadette Marshall
Why Patent Drawings Get Rejected Part2, Bernadette Marshall
Bernadette Marshall
Last time we discussed why drawings might get rejected. The following are real rejection/objection examples compiled from multiple notices. Each includes our suggested solution. Informal utility drawings; these may include hand drawn sketches, pencil drawings, photographs, photocopies of photographs and drawings with hand written text & numerals. -Notice from USPTO; “All sheets must be reasonably free from cracks, creases, and folds. Each sheet must be reasonably free from erasures and must be free from alterations, overwritings, and interlineations”4. -remedy, formalize the drawings. This usually involves tracing the informal drawings using a CAD program ensuring compliance with all USPTO drawing rules. …

Why Patent Drawings Get Rejected Part1, Bernadette Marshall

You may have had the misfortune to receive a drawing rejection or objection from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), or a Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rejection or other patent office rejection notice. Hopefully this will come with an invitation to correct defects in the application. Patent drawings can be part of or the entire reason for such a notice. Fortunately, many problems regarding patent drawings can be remedied. If drawings have been prepared and submitted without regard to the specific patent drawing rules, you stand a good chance that those drawings will be rejected. When this occurs, …
