University Course Scheduling During A Pandemic And University Course Planning: Math Models And Heuristic Algorithms, Mohammad Khamechian Aug 2022

University Course Scheduling During A Pandemic And University Course Planning: Math Models And Heuristic Algorithms, Mohammad Khamechian

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation has two chapters. In Chapter 1, we introduce two optimizationproblems related to university course planning. In the student course planning problem (SCPP), a student needs to design a course plan that allows him/her to graduate in a timely manner. In the department course planning problem (DCPP), an academic department needs to decide which courses to offer during which semesters to facilitate students’ timely graduation. Mathematical models of these problems are developed, coded in C++, and solved with IBM ILOG CPLEX. Experiments on small, medium-sized, and large real-world and fictional problem instances show the utility of the math model. …

Resident Doctor Duty Shift Scheduling In Tarragona, Spain, Anna Daniel Fuentes May 2022

Resident Doctor Duty Shift Scheduling In Tarragona, Spain, Anna Daniel Fuentes

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to create a computer algorithm to schedule family care resident doctors’ duty shifts in Tarragona, Spain. The algorithm considers European Working Time Directive regulations which limit the number of hours any worker can work in a year. Furthermore, each health center has different work time and staffing requirements, and the medical training program requirements change based on a resident’s level of experience also known as rank of residency. Fair scheduling is essential to healthcare workers’ rights to have time to recover between shifts while satisfying all the training requirements and regulations. Integer programming is …

Experimental Comparison Of Load Sharing Techniques For Fast Motion In Industrial Machines, Eike Marten Hillrichs May 2022

Experimental Comparison Of Load Sharing Techniques For Fast Motion In Industrial Machines, Eike Marten Hillrichs

Theses and Dissertations

Load sharing and synchronization techniques are essential for modern automation applications where single motor systems cannot meet the application requirements. Evenly sharing the load between multiple motors can increase the output of processes and reduce maintenance efforts due to uneven wear and tear. Rockwell Automation has developed two load sharing techniques for fast motion control applications. In this Thesis, the two load sharing techniques are experimentally compared regarding their ability to evenly share loads and control synchronized motions in a multi motor setup for fast motion. The techniques are compared using a setup with two motors coupled by a timing …

Computational Method To Analyze Novel Industrial-Type Compact Heat Exchangers Fin Designs, Oluwatosin Samuel Aworanti May 2022

Computational Method To Analyze Novel Industrial-Type Compact Heat Exchangers Fin Designs, Oluwatosin Samuel Aworanti

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method of numerical simulations has been applied to determine the heat load and pressure drop characteristics of computational method to analyze novel industrial-type compact heat exchangers fin designs. Two CFD software programs, Ansys Fluent and STAR-CCM+, were tested with air laminar flow. The research work demonstrated that Ansys Fluent is the more sensitive CFD software to laminar flow out of the two. Seven fin designs were tested to evaluate their performance in compact heat exchangers. The friction factor, f, and the Chilton Colburn factor, j, were used as the primary measures of …
