Structural Assessment Of Highway "N" Power Substation Under Earthquake Loads, Genda Chen, Dongming Yan, Zuocai Wang, Seth Justin, J. David Rogers, Kazi Rezaul Karim Oct 2009

Structural Assessment Of Highway "N" Power Substation Under Earthquake Loads, Genda Chen, Dongming Yan, Zuocai Wang, Seth Justin, J. David Rogers, Kazi Rezaul Karim

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, the Highway N Substation was analyzed with a finite element model (FEM) for its vulnerability. The 'rigid' bus and electric switch components were characterized with full scale shake table tests. Each component of the substation was carefully modeled with due considerations of mass density, stiffness and geometries. Based on the FEM, modal analysis was conducted to identify the natural frequencies of the structure along with their corresponding mass participation factors. In response spectrum and time history analyses, the dynamic responses of main components, such as 'rigid' buses and switches, were evaluated. The magnitude and location of the …

Development Of A One Dimensional Subsurface Contaminant Transport Model With Stochastic Applications, Benjamin Waldon Johnson Jan 2009

Development Of A One Dimensional Subsurface Contaminant Transport Model With Stochastic Applications, Benjamin Waldon Johnson

Masters Theses

"Contaminant source release history is a necessary element of contaminant mass transport simulation in the saturated zone. The source release history is unknown at many sites, and many inverse models have been developed to define finite release histories. To define a likely domain of three source history parameters, a mass balancebased one dimensional approach is developed and tested by discretizing the spatial domain into bands. By incorporating the approach in a spreadsheet model, observed data is represented by both variable length and constant length bands of analysis. Each representation of observed data was tested to determine the most appropriate band …

Membrane Properties Of Intact Rock Cores Of Burlington Limestone, Jefferson Dolomite, Darrington Phyllite, And Low Permeability Concrete, Megan Hart Jan 2009

Membrane Properties Of Intact Rock Cores Of Burlington Limestone, Jefferson Dolomite, Darrington Phyllite, And Low Permeability Concrete, Megan Hart

Doctoral Dissertations

"A number of laboratory studies have shown that clays exhibit membrane properties. However, little research has been performed on lithologies outside of pure clays. Recently, research focusing on mixed sand and clay membrane properties for engineering applications was performed. Still, literature only suggests the possibilities of membrane properties, osmotic or reverse-osmotic, associated with other naturally occurring 'tight' rock types. Therefore, the objectives of this research was to perform a series of hyperfiltration experiments using actual rock discs of Quarry Ridge Jefferson Dolomite, Darrington Phyllite, Lower Burlington Limestone, and low permeability concrete to determine if tight lithologies can function as membranes"--Abstract, …

Wind Power Applications To Groundwater Remediation, Ronald E. Gallagher Jan 2009

Wind Power Applications To Groundwater Remediation, Ronald E. Gallagher

Doctoral Dissertations

"The use of renewable energy systems to power groundwater remediation systems seems like an inherently good idea because of potential cost savings and environmental benefits associated with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Small wind turbine systems marketed for single residence applications may be the appropriate size for remediation systems, and such wind turbines are readily available at reasonable cost. Another benefit of using domestic wind turbine systems is that they are straightforward to install and operate with minimal training. One of the major drawbacks associated with using wind turbines at remediation sites is that site-specific wind velocity data is typically used …

Application Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) For Bridge Deck Condition Assessment: Using A 1.5 Ghz Ground-Coupled Antenna, Amos Wamweya Jan 2009

Application Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) For Bridge Deck Condition Assessment: Using A 1.5 Ghz Ground-Coupled Antenna, Amos Wamweya

Masters Theses

"This study is a GPR-based assessment of three bridge decks, two with a hot bituminous wearing surface and one with a bare concrete slab. The primary objectives of this study were: 1) to assess the integrity of the three bridge decks using a 1.5 GHz ground-coupled GPR antenna, and 2) to evaluate the utility of the 1.5 GHz ground-coupled antenna for bridge deck investigations. Core control (chloride ion concentration data and core integrity data) and visual inspection were used as interpretive constraint. The acquired GPR data were interpreted, and two plan view maps were generated. One depicts the magnitude of …

A Mobile Water Disinfection Unit Powered By Renewable Energy Systems, Matthew Vitello Jan 2009

A Mobile Water Disinfection Unit Powered By Renewable Energy Systems, Matthew Vitello

Masters Theses

"The current method of disinfection of water used by the United States Army requires a significant amount of mobilization and demobilization time as well as being energy intensive. In an effort to improve small unit mobility a need for a light-weight, low maintenance, highly mobile disinfection system has arisen. In addition to the potential military use, a system of this type could provide a safe drinking water product during the aftermath of natural or man-made disasters, reducing the burden on emergency management services. A prototype system was developed that is self-powered, has low maintenance requirements, and can be stored for …

Analysis Using Surface Wave Methods To Detect Shallow Manmade Tunnels, Niklas Henry Putnam Jan 2009

Analysis Using Surface Wave Methods To Detect Shallow Manmade Tunnels, Niklas Henry Putnam

Doctoral Dissertations

"Multi-method seismic surface wave approach was used to locate and estimate the dimensions of shallow horizontally-oriented cylindrical voids or manmade tunnels. The primary analytical methods employed were Attenuation Analysis of Rayleigh Waves (AARW), Surface Wave Common Offset (SWCO), and Spiking Filter (SF). Surface wave data were acquired at six study sites using a towed 24-channel land streamer and elastic-band accelerated weight-drop seismic source. Each site was underlain by one tunnel, nominally 1 meter in diameter and depth. The acquired surface wave data were analyzed automatically. Then interpretations compared to the field measurements to ascertain the degree of accuracy. The purpose …

A Renewable Energy Feasibility Study To Power A Water Supply Pump In Sacala Las Lomas, Guatemala, William Anthony Granich Jan 2009

A Renewable Energy Feasibility Study To Power A Water Supply Pump In Sacala Las Lomas, Guatemala, William Anthony Granich

Masters Theses

"A clean and sufficient source of drinking water can be a challenge to develop in the rural highlands of Guatemala. Installing a submersible pump in a groundwater well can provide a source of water that is free of contamination and yields sufficient water throughout the year. Submersible pumps are typically powered from grid-power; however, an alternative energy source may be considered. An evaluation of the renewable energy resources has been conducted in Sacala las Lomas de San Martin Jilotepeque, Chimaltenango, Guatemala (Sacala). The drilling of a deep groundwater well has been proposed in Sacala to supply the community with sufficient, …
