At the turn of 2015/2016 it is planned to launch in Poland a few new municipal solid waste incineration plants. This type activities causes usually concerns of the local community due to their potential negative impact on air quality. Are these fears are, however, justified? The article describes allowable air emissions for new waste incinerators, the actual emissions that occur from such installations, and the current state of knowledge about their impact on air pollution.English title: The impact of installations of municipal solid waste thermal treatment on air quality.

The chapter discusses the problem of air emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDFs) from the process of cement clinker production. In the analyzed cement kilns significant amount of fossil fuels is replaced with alternative fuels, mainly waste-derived fuels. Thus, particular attention has been paid to the potential impact on the level of the emissions such factors as type and quantity of used wastes and their ways of introducing into the kiln during co-combustion. The most troublesome air pollutant emissions that occur in rural areas are associated with the operation of domestic furnaces (mainly during the heating season) and the processes of open burning of plant residues (mainly outside the heating season). In the paper, some results of the measurement of mercury emission from OP-430 boiler working in the Combustion Plant “Kraków S.A.” are presented. The tests were carried out during combustion of various coals and changeable the boiler efficiency. Apart from investigation of mercury emission to the atmosphere (in gaseous and solid phase), total mercury concentration in coal, bottom ash and dust collected in electrostatic precipitators were analysed as well. Thus emission amount could be verified by means of the approximate mercury balance performed for the coal combustion process.

The paper presents the results of many years of complex research issues related to the emission of fluorine compounds of iron and steel processes. They allowed to examine these processes used in raw materials in terms of the fluorine content and their impact on the amount of emissions of fluorine compounds to the air. Were determined by measuring the levels of concentration in flue gases and stack emissions of fluorine in the form of gaseous and solid compounds, including water-soluble components (considered to be toxic).

Road transport is an essential source of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and reactive hydrocarbons (RHC) emissions to atmosphere. Quantity and chemical constitution of emitted substances and meteorological conditions determine the level of ozon (O3) concentration forming as a result of photochemical reactions. The method presented in the paper consists in designation of quantity and chemical constitution of substances emitted from mo-bile sources and special mathematical modeling of physical and chemical transformations that take place in the lowest atmospheric layer.

Assessment of the state of air pollution in the urban area is a difficult and complex task. Depending on the method of assessment the procedure requires a comprehensive research and calculations of air emissions from all sources occurring in the area and the use of atmospheric dispersion models or large-scale implementation of direct measurements of air pollutant concentrations. The paper presents the results of a comprehensive assessment of air pollution in the city of Nowy Sącz (Poland). This involved determining the emissions of selected pollutants from various sources with their percentages of the total emission and immission on the area under consideration. As a result of measurement of concentrations of particulate matter and benzo(a)pyrene in several parts of the city were verified results of theoretical calculations and determined the size of the inflow of pollutants from outside the area in question.

The paper presents the implementation of air pollution monitoring in the province of Kielce (Poland), associated with verification of the location and the measuring range of points to measure the concentrations of air pollutants. For this purpose were used calculations of the pollutants dispersion and statistical analysis of measurement results obtained on existing measuring stations. In the statistical calculations were used analysis of variance homogeneity, based on Cochran, Bartlett and Hartley tests.
