Peer-To-Peer Energy Trading For Networked Microgrids, Jonathan David Warner Jan 2021

Peer-To-Peer Energy Trading For Networked Microgrids, Jonathan David Warner

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Considering the limitations of the existing centralized power infrastructure, research interests have been directed to decentralized smart power systems constructed as networks of interconnected microgrids. Therefore, it has become critical to develop secure and efficient energy trading mechanisms among networked microgrids for reliability and economic mutual benefits. Furthermore, integrating blockchain technologies into the energy sector has gained significant interest among researchers and industry professionals. Considering these trends, the work in this thesis focuses on developing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading models to facilitate transactions among microgrids in a multiagent network. Price negotiation mechanisms are proposed for both islanded and grid-connected microgrid …

An Analysis Of Estimated Costs Versus Actual Costs In Usace Section 14 Emergency Streambank Protection Projects, Hunter Waugaman Jan 2021

An Analysis Of Estimated Costs Versus Actual Costs In Usace Section 14 Emergency Streambank Protection Projects, Hunter Waugaman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Civil Works projects are designed to provide national management of water resources. These works use emergency streambank protection to protect public facilities, like bridges and highways. The projects under this authority have limited funding, therefore, many design and field studies are omitted, which increases project uncertainties resulting in cost overruns and contract modifications. This study analyzes previously constructed projects by comparing the independent government estimate with the contractor’s actual costs and identifying the variables causing these differences via statistical analysis. The variables identified are categorized into those elements that affect the accuracy of …

Climate Resilience: Examination Of Revised Heat Transfer Models In The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model For Pavement Temperature Prediction, Austin Michael Jarrell Jan 2021

Climate Resilience: Examination Of Revised Heat Transfer Models In The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model For Pavement Temperature Prediction, Austin Michael Jarrell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is commonly referenced as the state-of-the-practice for the analysis and design of new and rehabilitated pavement assets. The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) incorporated within the MEPDG is a well-recognized and standardized method for estimating temperature profiles in pavements; temperature is a portion of the climate inputs in the MEPDG. Many have already begun to convert atmospheric temperature predictions from externally based climate models into the MEPDG to create robust designs for climate change. As pavement designers and researchers seek robust solutions while formulating resilient pavement designs, it is likely that the EICM …

Laboratory Results And Mathematical Modeling Of Spore Surface Interactions In Stormwater Runoff, Anne M. Mikelonis, Katherine Ratliff, Sungmin Youn Nov 2020

Laboratory Results And Mathematical Modeling Of Spore Surface Interactions In Stormwater Runoff, Anne M. Mikelonis, Katherine Ratliff, Sungmin Youn

All Engineering Faculty Research

Development of numerical models to predict stormwater-mediated transport of pathogenic spores in the environment depends on an understanding of adhesion forces that dictate detachment after rain events. Zeta potential values were measured in the laboratory for Bacillus globigii and Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki, two common surrogates used to represent Bacillus anthracis, in synthetic baseline ultrapure water and laboratory prepared stormwater. Zeta potential curves were also determined for materials representative of urban infrastructure (concrete and asphalt). These data were used to predict the interaction energy between the spores and urban materials using Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) modeling. B. globigii and B. thuringiensis kurstaki …

A Conceptual Model For Integrating Community Health In Managing Remediation Of West Virginia And Central Appalachia’S Abandoned Coal Mines, Sarah J. Surber Feb 2020

A Conceptual Model For Integrating Community Health In Managing Remediation Of West Virginia And Central Appalachia’S Abandoned Coal Mines, Sarah J. Surber

Applied Safety & Technology Faculty Research

The decline of the coal industry and the associated ongoing bankruptcies of large coal companies create a serious concern that surface coal mining states may inherit large-scale liabilities for unremediated coal mines. These states may also have limited funding to remediate all abandoned mines at once, requiring prioritization of the cleanup of coal mines. In West Virginia and central Appalachia, these coal mines are often located in areas ranked as having poor public health outcomes, poor health factors, and extremely low-socioeconomic status. Epidemiological research has associated poor health outcomes for residents located near coal mining. Coal mine remediation presents an …

Numerical Simulation For The Hydrodynamic Performance Of Hydropower Turbine Near Free Surface, Zeda Yin Jan 2019

Numerical Simulation For The Hydrodynamic Performance Of Hydropower Turbine Near Free Surface, Zeda Yin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The performance of hydropower turbine in shallow water can be affected by the presence of free surface. Therefore, it is of great interest to investigate the influence of free surface on hydropower turbine performance through computational simulations. For a better understanding of flow field around hydropower turbine operating in shallow water, it is important to analyze the flow over a single hydrofoil beneath free surface first. Therefore, as the first part of this thesis, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology was used for numerical simulation of 2D unsteady incompressible viscous flow over a hydrofoil under the free surface. The computation …

Polymer-Capped Nanoparticle Transport In Granular Media Filtration: Deviation From The Colloidal Filtration Model, Ijung Kim, Tongren Zhu, Sungmin Youn, Desmond F. Lawler Jul 2017

Polymer-Capped Nanoparticle Transport In Granular Media Filtration: Deviation From The Colloidal Filtration Model, Ijung Kim, Tongren Zhu, Sungmin Youn, Desmond F. Lawler

All Engineering Faculty Research

The single-collector removal efficiency based on the colloidal filtration model is widely used to quantify deposition of nanoparticles in porous media filtration. The validity of this theory for nanoparticles, especially at filtration rates used in water treatment, was evaluated. Granular media filtration experiments were performed under widely variant physical conditions. Chemical effects were minimized by selecting spherical branched polyethylenimine capped silver nanoparticles as a positively charged nanoparticle to avoid electrostatic repulsion with the negatively charged silica filter media. The model and experimental results agreed well for 50 and 100 nm particles, but 10 nm particles were removed to a lesser …
