Validation Of Computational Model Of A Piezoelectric Flow Rate Sensor, Eben Roberto Escobedo Dec 2021

Validation Of Computational Model Of A Piezoelectric Flow Rate Sensor, Eben Roberto Escobedo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study validates a computational simulation of a piezoelectric cantilever beam undergoing different loads by showing a comparison of its results against theoretical calculations. The objective of the computational model is to simulate the behavior of a beam made of a piezoelectric material which can be used as a flow rate sensor due to the ability of the material to convert a mechanical load into an electrical load. After validating the model, different geometries, material properties and loads can be simulated to observe the different behaviors and bring the possibility of selecting the most convenient options according to the needs …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin Jun 2019

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin

Honors Theses

Structural health monitoring has the potential to allow composite structures to be more reliable and safer, then by using more traditional damage assessment techniques. Structural health monitoring (SHM) utilizes individual sensor units that are placed throughout the load bearing sections of a structure and gather data that is used for stress analysis and damage detection. Statistical time based algorithms are used to analyze collected data and determine both damage size and probable location from within the structure. While traditional calculations and life span analysis can be done for structures made of isotropic materials such as steel or other metals, composites …

Bouncing Dynamics Of A Class Of Mem/Nem Switching Systems, Mohamed Bognash Jan 2019

Bouncing Dynamics Of A Class Of Mem/Nem Switching Systems, Mohamed Bognash

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The aim of the present research is to understand the bouncing dynamic behavior of NEM/MEM switches in order to improve the switch performance and reliability. It is well known that the bouncing can dramatically degrade the switch performance and life; hence, in the present study, bouncing dynamics of a cantilever-based NME/MEM switch has been studied in detail. To this end, a model of a MEM switch that incorporates electrostatic force, squeeze film air damping force as well as asperity-based contact force has been proposed for an electrostatically actuated switch. An actuation force due to piezoelectric effects is further included in …

Fabrication And Testing Of Cfrp Composites With Embedded Piezoelectric Particles For Temperature Sensing And Energy Harvesting, Emilio Tarango Valles Jan 2016

Fabrication And Testing Of Cfrp Composites With Embedded Piezoelectric Particles For Temperature Sensing And Energy Harvesting, Emilio Tarango Valles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

As a part of this world's continuous evolution and technological advancements, smart materials and functional composites have become an attractive topic. In many cases, these new functional composites are replacing the traditional engineering material due to their customizable mechanical properties. This Thesis analyzes and demonstrates the signal response, sensing capabilities and structural properties from Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composites (CFRP) with embedded Lead Zirconate Titanate Particles (PZT). The added PZT particles function as actuators, giving the composites a functionality. The PZT quantity inside each composite was variated to study better and characterize the mechanical and electrical properties; the variations were …

Vibration Analysis Of Piezoelectric Microcantilever Sensors, Amin Salehi-Khojin May 2008

Vibration Analysis Of Piezoelectric Microcantilever Sensors, Amin Salehi-Khojin

All Dissertations

The main objective of this dissertation is to comprehensively analyze vibration characteristics of microcantilever-based sensors with application to ultra small mass detection and low dimensional materials characterization. The first part of this work focuses on theoretical developments and experimental verification of piezoelectric microcantilevers, commercially named Active Probes, which are extensively used in most today's advanced Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) systems. Due to special geometry and configuration of Active Probes, especially multiple jump discontinuities in their cross-section, a general and comprehensive framework is introduced for forced vibration and modal analysis of discontinuous flexible beams. More specifically, a general formulation is obtained …
