A Review Of Steel Content Taught In U.S. University Construction Management Programs, Jeremy Miles Thompson May 2014

A Review Of Steel Content Taught In U.S. University Construction Management Programs, Jeremy Miles Thompson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Throughout the rocky mountain region there are 18 universities that offer a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management (CM). Only two of those universities, Colorado State University and Brigham Young University Idaho, offer an in-depth course on the application of steel in the construction industry. The other universities offer structures courses that teach only the basics of steel in the construction industry, like how to calculate loads using steel beams and columns.

A Survey Of Utah's Public Secondary Education Science Teachers To Determine Their Feelings Of Preparedness To Teach Engineering Design, Roland Tyler Ames May 2014

A Survey Of Utah's Public Secondary Education Science Teachers To Determine Their Feelings Of Preparedness To Teach Engineering Design, Roland Tyler Ames

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Education is always changing and science education is no exception, with many influential publications passing through science education over the years. The latest wave in science standards is called the Next Generation Science Standards. The Next Generation Science Standards are anticipated to have a significant effect on state science standards around the entire country. One thing about these new standards is very different from all previous science standards—they include the principle of engineering design in them.

Asking science teachers to teach engineering design is asking them to teach a principle for which their teaching licensure would not have formally prepared …

Improving Automotive Troubleshooting Skills, Kevin C. Roner May 2014

Improving Automotive Troubleshooting Skills, Kevin C. Roner

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This project gathered and analyzed data for two cohorts of students at Weber State University. The final performance exam data from the engine controls course and the Automotive Service Excellence certification results were gathered on each student from two cohorts. A skills survey was developed to determine each student’s skill level. The survey was delivered to the students and their mentor technicians in the field. The data was analyzed to identify correlating items across the data sets. Those correlations were used to determine which lessons within the course in the content area of diagnostic troubleshooting required improvement. The project resulted …

Expert Vs. Novice: Problem Decomposition/Recomposition In Engineering Design, Ting Song May 2014

Expert Vs. Novice: Problem Decomposition/Recomposition In Engineering Design, Ting Song

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this research was to investigate the design behavior. A commonly used design strategy called “problem decomposition and recomposition” was the focus of the study. Dyads of engineering experts, dyads of engineering seniors, and dyads of engineering freshmen completed an engineering design challenge within an hour. The entire design process was video and audio recorded. After the design session, participants participated in a group interview.

The conversation and behavior from the design were transcribed, segmented, and coded. Two coding systems including the FBS ontology and “levels of the problem” were used in this study. A series of statistical …

Task-Value, Self-Regulated Learning, And Performance In A Web-Intensive Undergraduate Engineering Course: How Are They Related?, Oenardi Lawanto, Harry B. Santoso, Wade H. Goodridge, Kevin N. Lawanto Mar 2014

Task-Value, Self-Regulated Learning, And Performance In A Web-Intensive Undergraduate Engineering Course: How Are They Related?, Oenardi Lawanto, Harry B. Santoso, Wade H. Goodridge, Kevin N. Lawanto

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

In this paper, the authors report on how students' perception of course material in terms of importance, utility, and interest is related to their self-regulated learning (SRL) skills and project performance in a web-intensive undergraduate learning environment. The data from 57 students were analyzed. Data sources included survey instruments, ranking questions, and project grades. The research highlights important components of online education by evaluating the connections between students' perceptions of webintensive course value, SRL, and project performance. Findings show a significant positive relationship between task value and performance, specifically between importance of the activity and performance. From a SRL perspective, …

Common Misconceptions Found In A Statics Course Through Discourse Analysis Of Student Learning Logs, Christopher Green Jan 2014

Common Misconceptions Found In A Statics Course Through Discourse Analysis Of Student Learning Logs, Christopher Green

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Statics is a gateway engineering course. Many students use their performance in a statics course to evaluate and judge their desire to continue within an engineering field. Students’ performance can be adversely impacted by misconceptions they may have regarding class content and analysis techniques. Feedback from instructors can help students navigate through their misconceptions. It is critical that this feedback be concise and timely to prevent a slip in self-efficacy, or an increase in their frustration. Both factors can negatively impact a student’s desire to persist in engineering. Implementation of online learning logs allows students a timely communication avenue that …
