Expanding Faculty-Student Interactions In Statics: An Exploratory Study Of A Statics Course With Learning Assistants, Valerie V. Bracho Perez Mar 2022

Expanding Faculty-Student Interactions In Statics: An Exploratory Study Of A Statics Course With Learning Assistants, Valerie V. Bracho Perez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Statics is one of the first fundamental engineering classes within the ME undergraduate curriculum, in which a student’s performance in the course can impact their overall academic success. Recent efforts to enhance students learning in fundamental engineering courses have included integrating Learning Assistants (LAs), undergraduate peers who have previously excelled in the course, into the instructional team of the course. The purpose of this Master's thesis is to explore the enactment of a Statics classroom with LAs, the interactions that characterize it, and the impact it has on the students and instructional teams. A qualitative case study of a Statics …

Exploring The Role Of Higher Education In Responsible Deployment Of Artificial Intelligence, Shahin Vassigh Sep 2021

Exploring The Role Of Higher Education In Responsible Deployment Of Artificial Intelligence, Shahin Vassigh

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Higher education is the key driver for the teaching, research, and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as it bears responsibility for preparing engineers, scientists, technologists, and corporate leaders who shape and fuel its revolutionary advances. With AI and automation technologies relying on more advanced levels of training, and universities serving as the prime site for their development, faculty views on the implications of this technology are critically important.

The purpose of this case study was to gain insights into how academics and disciplinary experts perceive their roles and responsibilities in the teaching, development, and deployment of AI. Using FIU as …

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Infrastructure Projects During Front-End Planning Phase, Valentina Ferrer Rivero Mar 2021

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Infrastructure Projects During Front-End Planning Phase, Valentina Ferrer Rivero

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Front-End Planning (FEP) for Sustainable Infrastructure (SI) projects is a promising process that can support addressing multiple challenges in infrastructure projects (i.e. cost overruns, schedule delays, and poor sustainability). This study aims to investigate synergies between sustainability and FEP tools for infrastructures through stakeholders’ surveys, multiple case-study analyses, and a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activity with students. The PBL activity enhanced students’ knowledge on FEP for SI projects, and, together with other analyses, it helped in defining three different frameworks that correlate sustainability and FEP tools for infrastructure projects. The findings of this thesis contribute to the infrastructure, engineering and construction …

A Structural Equation Model Analysis Of Computing Identity Sub-Constructs And Student Academic Persistence, Mohsen Taheri Nov 2020

A Structural Equation Model Analysis Of Computing Identity Sub-Constructs And Student Academic Persistence, Mohsen Taheri

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the impact of computing identity sub-constructs on the academic persistence of computing students. This research provides models, quantified relationships, and insights to increase the number of graduates with the intention of pursuing a career in computing. Despite the growing significance of computer science and all the projected new jobs in computer science, many university and college programs suffer from low student persistence rates. One theoretical framework used to better understand persistence in other STEM disciplines is disciplinary identity. Disciplinary identity refers to how students see themselves with respect to a discipline. This study examines the effects of …

Targeted Presentation Skill Trainings To Nurture Construction Management Students At Florida International University, Gabriella D. Santi Kasabdji Mar 2020

Targeted Presentation Skill Trainings To Nurture Construction Management Students At Florida International University, Gabriella D. Santi Kasabdji

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today’s fast-paced work environment, competent construction managers (CM) are vital for project success. However, to be competent, these professionals require the mastery of not only technical skills but also soft skills that enable them to achieve their full potential. Regardless, many CM prize technical abilities over the day-to-day writing, speaking, and overall soft skills, assuming these are not as important to the knowledge of complex concepts. Industry leaders confirm this, as evidence states graduate construction managers lack the basic communication skills to “hit the ground running”. That said, academic programs should seek to adapt and nurture these vital skill …

Describing And Mapping The Interactions Between Student Affective Factors Related To Persistence In Science, Physics, And Engineering, Jacqueline Doyle Jun 2017

Describing And Mapping The Interactions Between Student Affective Factors Related To Persistence In Science, Physics, And Engineering, Jacqueline Doyle

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how students’ beliefs and attitudes interact with their identities as physics people, motivated by calls to increase participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. This work combines several theoretical frameworks, including Identity theory, Future Time Perspective theory, and other personality traits to investigate associations between these factors. An enriched understanding of how these attitudinal factors are associated with each other extends prior models of identity and link theoretical frameworks used in psychological and educational research. The research uses a series of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including linear and logistic regression analysis, thematic interview analysis, and …

Development Of Hardware In The Loop Real-Time Control Techniques For Hybrid Power Systems Involving Distributed Demands And Sustainable Energy Sources, Ali Mazloomzadeh Nov 2014

Development Of Hardware In The Loop Real-Time Control Techniques For Hybrid Power Systems Involving Distributed Demands And Sustainable Energy Sources, Ali Mazloomzadeh

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The future power grid will effectively utilize renewable energy resources and distributed generation to respond to energy demand while incorporating information technology and communication infrastructure for their optimum operation. This dissertation contributes to the development of real-time techniques, for wide-area monitoring and secure real-time control and operation of hybrid power systems.

To handle the increased level of real-time data exchange, this dissertation develops a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that is equipped with a state estimation scheme from the real-time data. This system is verified on a specially developed laboratory-based test bed facility, as a hardware and software …
