Wireless Power Transfer In Autonomous Mobile Microgrids, Carl Greene
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The ability to autonomously dock unmanned ground vehicles plays a key role in mobile micro-grids, where efficient power transfer is paramount. The approach utilized in this work allows for near-field wireless power transfer in remote locations with minimal support. Establishing a micro-grid power system connection autonomously using wireless power eliminates the arduous task of designing a complex, multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) robotic arm. The work presented in this thesis focuses on both the hardware and software within the micro-grid system. This particular near-field wireless system consists of a primary and secondary set of modules, comprised of Litz wire coils, …
Saturation Behaviors In Deep Turbulence, Jeffrey R. R. Beck
Saturation Behaviors In Deep Turbulence, Jeffrey R. R. Beck
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Distributed-volume atmospheric turbulence near the ground significantly limits the performance of incoherent imaging and coherent beam projection systems operating over long horizontal paths. Defense, military and civilian surveillance, border security, and target identification systems are interested in terrestrial imaging and beam projection over very long horizontal paths, but atmospheric turbulence can blur the imagery and aberrate the laser beam such that they are beyond usefulness. While many post-processing and adaptive optics techniques have been developed to mitigate the effects of turbulence, many of these techniques do not work as expected in stronger volumetric turbulence, or in many cases don't work …

The first two decades of the 21st century witnessed the emergence of “metamaterials”. The prospect of unrestricted control over light-matter interactions was a major contributing factor leading to the realization of new technologies and advancement of existing ones. While the field certainly does not lack innovative applications, widespread commercial deployment may still be several decades away. Fabrication of sophisticated 3d micro and nano structures, specially for telecommunications and optical frequencies will require a significant advancement of current technologies. More importantly, the effects of absorption and scattering losses will require a robust solution since this renders any conceivable application of metamaterials …

Thousands of years ago human discovered that if a slice of amber is rubbed against fur, it would absorb light-weight objects. Hundreds of years after that the ancient people figured out that there are actually two different characteristics of attraction and repulsion. Another 2000 years passed when human discovered that these two wonders of nature, magnetism and electricity are actually linked together like the two sides of the same coin. Since then, in the early 19th century great huge achievements were made in antennas and propagation by scientists such as Hans Christen Oersted, Heinrich Hertz, Alexander Popov and Marconi. Since …
Electro-Optic Antenna Elements For Passive Phased Array Radar, Evan Gawron
Electro-Optic Antenna Elements For Passive Phased Array Radar, Evan Gawron
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Passive phased antenna arrays are utilized in military and civilian radar systems to determine the received signal origination. Phased array placement for optimal reception is challenging due to the required supporting electronic hardware and the associated coaxial cabling that typically accompanies each antenna channel. Low noise amplifiers and frequency conversion hardware add size and complexity, limiting possible positions for phased array placement. Eliminating required phased array electronic subcomponents without sacrificing function would allow placement onto smaller agile platforms, such as unmanned systems and rapid deployment networks. Electro-optic (EO) antenna elements utilize an optical waveguide embedded between the antenna and ground …

Enhancing The Resolution Of Imaging Systems By Spatial Spectrum Manipulation, Wyatt Adams
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Much research effort has been spent in the 21st century on superresolution imaging techniques, methods which can beat the diffraction limit. Subwavelength composite structures called ``metamaterials" had initially shown great promise in superresolution imaging applications in the early 2000s, owing to their potential for nearly arbitrary capabilities in controlling light. However, for optical frequencies they are often plagued by absorption and scattering losses which can decay or destroy their interesting properties. Similar issues limit the application of other superresolution devices operating as effective media, or metal films that can transfer waves with large momentum by supporting surface plasmon polaritons. In …
Controlling Light With Metadevices, Xu Zhang
Controlling Light With Metadevices, Xu Zhang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The development of metamaterials provides a new way to manipulate electromagnetic waves by sub-wavelength artificial structures, and hence brings new properties and functionalities that cannot be found with conventional materials. This leads to the possibility of previously unthought-of applications, including perfect lenses, invisibility cloaks, and perfect absorbers. However, several critical challenges need to be addressed before transiting from intriguing scientific findings to real-world usable devices.
This dissertation deals with two challenges regarding the practical use of metamaterials. Firstly, fabrication of truly three-dimensional (3D) and large-scale metamaterials is needed to increase the degrees of freedom of the functionality for device level …
Linear Ring Resonator Modulator For Microwave Photonic Links, Arash Hosseinzadeh
Linear Ring Resonator Modulator For Microwave Photonic Links, Arash Hosseinzadeh
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Modulators within Microwave photonic links (MPLs) encode Radio Frequency (RF) signal information to the optical domain for transmission in applications such as wireless access networks and antenna remoting exploiting advantages optical fiber offers over RF coaxial cables including bandwidth, loss, size, weight, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. A critical figure-of-merit in MPLs is spur-free-dynamic-range (SFDR) defining the range of RF signal power a MPL transmits without distortion. Current Mach-Zehnder Interference (MZI) modulators used in MPLs limit the SFDR because of the associated nonlinear sinusoidal transfer function.
A rigorous theoretical method is developed followed by design, fabrication, and testing to investigate …

Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel in the United States and remains an essential source of energy. While more than half of coal production comes from surface mining, nearly twice as many workers are employed by underground operations.
One of the key pieces of equipment used in underground coal mining is the continuous mining machine. These large and powerful machines are operated in confined spaces by remote control. Since 1984, 40 mine workers in the U. S. have been killed when struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine. It is estimated that a majority of these accidents could …

GPS is a critical tool often used in terrestrial location and navigation. However, GPS relies on a system of satellites in medium earth orbit and is prone to dropouts at higher latitudes, and may be susceptible to spoofing or other attacks. Thus, it is prudent to examine possible alternatives. Recently, star tracking has been of interest in global positioning. There are many implementations of a star tracker using an imaging-based optical system to capture star locations in order to estimate position using celestial navigation techniques. These imaging systems are performance limited by blurring imposed by atmospheric turbulence, platform jitter, and …

Solar photovoltaic (PV) devices harvest energy from solar radiation and convert it to electricity. PV technologies, as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels, use clean and renewable energy while minimizing pollution. For decades researchers have been developing thin film solar cells as an important alternatives to the relatively expensive bulk crystal solar cell technology. Among those, hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells prevails for good efficiency, non-toxic and materially abundant nature. However, a-Si:H thickness must be minimized to prevent light induced degradation, so optical enhancement is necessary. Light manipulation has to be applied and carefully engineered to trap light within …

Development Of An Ionic Liquid Ferrofluid Electrospray Source And Mode Shape Studies Of A Ferrofluid In A Non-Uniform Magnetic Field, Edmond Joseph Meyer Iv
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
An electrospray source has been developed using a novel new fluid that is both magnetic and conductive. Unlike conventional electrospray sources that required microfabricated structures to support the fluid to be electrosprayed, this new electrospray fluid utilizes the Rosensweig instability to create the structures in the magnetic fluid when an external magnetic field was applied. Application of an external electric field caused these magnetic fluid structures to spray. These fluid based structures were found to spray at a lower onset voltage than was predicted for electrospray sources with solid structures of similar geometry. These fluid based structures were also found …
