An Analysis Of Testing Variables In Rapid Compression Machine Experiments, Jenna Ezzell Jul 2017

An Analysis Of Testing Variables In Rapid Compression Machine Experiments, Jenna Ezzell

Master's Theses (2009 -)

There have been discrepancies noted with regards to experimental data from rapid compression machines (RCM). When data is compared from different RCM facilities, the ignition delay times are inconsistent when inspecting any particular temperature. Currently in publications, if these datasets are compared, the discrepancy is said to be due to heat loss, however this issue has yet to be examined more thoroughly. To determine what the root cause of this discrepancy is, four different fake RCM facilities were created and simulated. There were also different sets of initial conditions used to determine how this may affect the data. They were …

Health Condition Monitoring And Fault-Tolerant Operation Of Adjustable Speed Drives, Jiangbiao He Oct 2015

Health Condition Monitoring And Fault-Tolerant Operation Of Adjustable Speed Drives, Jiangbiao He

Dissertations (1934 -)

Adjustable speed drives (ASDs) have been extensively used in industrial applications over the past few decades because of their benefits of energy saving and control flexibilities. However, the wider penetration of ASD systems into industrial applications is hindered by the lack of health monitoring and fault-tolerant operation techniques, especially in safety-critical applications. In this dissertation, a comprehensive portfolio of health condition monitoring and fault-tolerant operation strategies is developed and implemented for multilevel neutral-point-clamped (NPC) power converters in ASDs. Simulations and experiments show that these techniques can improve power cycling lifetime of power transistors, on-line diagnosis of switch faults, and fault-tolerant …

Mechatronics Design Process With Energy Optimization For Industrial Machines, Aderiano Medeiros Da Silva Apr 2015

Mechatronics Design Process With Energy Optimization For Industrial Machines, Aderiano Medeiros Da Silva

Dissertations (1934 -)

The need for designing industrial machines with higher energy efficiency, reliability, flexibility, and accuracy has increased to satisfy market demand for higher productivity at reduced costs in a sustainable manner. As machines become more complex, model-based design is essential to overcome the challenges in mechatronic system design. However, a well-designed mechanical system with a well-designed and tuned control system are not sufficient for machines to operate at high-performance conditions; this also heavily depends on trajectory planning and the appropriate selection of the motors controlling the axes of the machine. In this work, a model-based design approach to properly select motors …

Modeling, Analysis, And Verification Of A Weld-Breaking Mechanism For Automatic Circuit Recloser Applications, Brian Korves Jul 2014

Modeling, Analysis, And Verification Of A Weld-Breaking Mechanism For Automatic Circuit Recloser Applications, Brian Korves

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The automatic circuit recloser (ACR) is responsible for protecting electrical distribution grids in the event that high voltage power lines come in contact with ground. In order to prevent damage, ACRs break the electrical continuity of the circuit through the use of a vacuum interrupter and a weld breaking mechanism. Vacuum interrupters consist of two metallic contacts in an air-tight ceramic housing. Due to the electrical interactions that take place during the interruption process, unintended welds are formed between the contacts. These welds have the ability to impede or completely stop the interruption process, thus rendering the ACR inoperable. In …
