Optimal Design Of Photovoltaic, Biomass, Fuel Cell, Hydrogen Tank Units And Electrolyzer Hybrid System For A Remote Area In Egypt, Abd El-Sattar Abd El-Sattar, Salah Kamel, Hamdy M. Sultan, Hossam Zawbaa, Francisco Jurado

Articles

In this paper, a new isolated hybrid system is simulated and analyzed to obtain the optimal sizing and meet the electricity demand with cost improvement for servicing a small remote area with a peak load of 420 kW. The major configuration of this hybrid system is Photovoltaic (PV) modules, Biomass gasifier (BG), Electrolyzer units, Hydrogen Tank units (HT), and Fuel Cell (FC) system. A recent optimization algorithm, namely Mayfly Optimization Algorithm (MOA) is utilized to ensure that all load demand is met at the lowest energy cost (EC) and minimize the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the proposed system. The …

Insulation Sensitivity Analysis For An Optimized Fabric Shelter Off-Grid Hybrid Energy System, Jay F. Pearson [*], Torrey J. Wagner, Steven Schuldt Oct 2019

Insulation Sensitivity Analysis For An Optimized Fabric Shelter Off-Grid Hybrid Energy System, Jay F. Pearson [*], Torrey J. Wagner, Steven Schuldt

Faculty Publications

During military and disaster relief operations, connecting to an established electrical grid is rarely an option. In these situations, camps consisting of poorly insulated fabric shelters are predominantly powered by inefficient diesel generators that require frequent fuel resupply. In order to reduce the fuel demand of these generators, camps may utilize photovoltaic-battery systems. This paper presents an innovative cost-performance model capable of optimizing solar array size, battery backup system, and shelter insulation type to minimize the operating cost of powering a single fabric shelter. Model performance was evaluated using one year of insolation, weather and energy requirement data from a …

Control And Optimization Of Energy Storage In Ac And Dc Power Grids, Samy Mohamed Mar 2019

Control And Optimization Of Energy Storage In Ac And Dc Power Grids, Samy Mohamed

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Energy storage attracts attention nowadays due to the critical role it will play in the power generation and transportation sectors. Electric vehicles, as moving energy storage, are going to play a key role in the terrestrial transportation sector and help reduce greenhouse emissions. Bulk hybrid energy storage will play another critical role for feeding the new types of pulsed loads on ship power systems. However, to ensure the successful adoption of energy storage, there is a need to control and optimize the charging/discharging process, taking into consideration the customer preferences and the technical aspects. In this dissertation, novel control and …

Design Method For Wideband Circularly Polarized Slot Antennas, Adam Narbudowicz, Matthias John, Vit Sipal, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Jul 2015

Design Method For Wideband Circularly Polarized Slot Antennas, Adam Narbudowicz, Matthias John, Vit Sipal, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A compact ultrawideband (UWB) circularly polarized (CP) slot antenna is proposed with a methodology for automated reoptimization for packaging with proprietary devices. The slot structure employs a dual-feed with an integrated compact UWB phase shifter. The design process involves an advanced optimization algorithm and demonstrates the use of spline curves for generation of CP signals. These allow easy optimization, while preserving phase coherency across a wideband. The prototyped antennahas a CP bandwidth of 54% (from 3.2 to 6.1 GHz).

Tools And Methods To Optimize The Analysis Of Telescopic Performance Metrics On Sofia, Steven R. Wilson, Holger Jakob, Stefan Teufel, Zaheer Ali, Jeffrey Van Cleve, Brian Eney, Greg Perryman Aug 2013

Tools And Methods To Optimize The Analysis Of Telescopic Performance Metrics On Sofia, Steven R. Wilson, Holger Jakob, Stefan Teufel, Zaheer Ali, Jeffrey Van Cleve, Brian Eney, Greg Perryman

STAR Program Research Presentations

SOFIA is an infrared observatory mounted on a modified 747 engineered to do infrared astronomy at 45000 feet. The telescope equipment contains a number of sensors and stabilizers that allow the telescope to capture images while mounted in a moving plane. We have developed methods to analyze the performance of the telescope assembly that will help improve the stabilization and image capturing performance of the observatory. Here we present reusable methods to analyze telescope performance data that will enable improvements in the quality of the scientific data that is produced by the SOFIA. This poster focuses on the multi-flight performance …

Wireless Sensor Network Deployment, Yipeng Qu Mar 2013

Wireless Sensor Network Deployment, Yipeng Qu

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are widely used for various civilian and military applications, and thus have attracted significant interest in recent years. This work investigates the important problem of optimal deployment of WSNs in terms of coverage and energy consumption. Five deployment algorithms are developed for maximal sensing range and minimal energy consumption in order to provide optimal sensing coverage and maximum lifetime. Also, all developed algorithms include self-healing capabilities in order to restore the operation of WSNs after a number of nodes have become inoperative.

Two centralized optimization algorithms are developed, one based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and one …
