Modular Multilevel Converters With Module-Level Energy Storage For Medium Voltage Applications, Bora Novakovic
Modular Multilevel Converters With Module-Level Energy Storage For Medium Voltage Applications, Bora Novakovic
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is on Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) converter design and analysis and its integration with energy storage at the low voltage module-level. The developed converter concept and topology can be used in various applications especially for the support of intermittent renewable energy resources. The general converter structure is analyzed and extended to include integrated energy storage suitable but not limited to medium voltage applications. The behavior of the idealized structure is analyzed to obtain equations that govern general converter behavior and identify possible control loops. Detail mathematical switching model is developed for the MMC converter with generalized module structure. …
A Hardware-In-The-Loop Platform For Dc Protection, Mark Vygoder
A Hardware-In-The-Loop Platform For Dc Protection, Mark Vygoder
Theses and Dissertations
With the proliferation of power electronics, dc-based power distribution systems can be realized; however, dc electrical protection remains a significant barrier to mass implementation dc power distribution. Controller Hardware-in-the-loop (CHiL) simulation enables moving up technology readiness levels (TRL) quickly. This work presents an end-to-end solution for dc protection CHiL for early design exploration and verification for dc protection, allowing for the rapid development of dc protection schemes for both Line-to-Line (LL) and Line-to-Ground (LG) faults. The approach combines using Latency Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC), a real-time simulation method for power electronic, and National Instruments (NI) FPGA hardware to enable …

Wireless power systems are getting popular with the improvement in the technology not just because it is a fancy and cool conception but also because it is more convenient and safer in some applications. For example, this project aims to help high power data center design to be changed to wirelessly powered center to provide a safe and hands-on work environment even under different load conditions. Thinking of the …
Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Resonant Solid State Transformer, Mohamad Zouheir Sabbah
Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Resonant Solid State Transformer, Mohamad Zouheir Sabbah
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the design of a full-bridge resonant LLC Solid State Transformer. The proposed topology uses a high-frequency transformer which helps minimizing its cost and size, and enables operating at varying load conditions. By using a resonant circuit, soft switching is achieved. Commutation techniques are discussed, namely ZVS and ZCS. Both concepts are applied on different legs of the H-bridge. Pulse frequency modulation (PFM) and Phase Shifting Modulation (PSM) are utilized to control this resonant converter. One of the requirements of this work is to achieve a tightly regulated DC bus voltage. This was shown to be achieved using …
Virtual Droop Control Framework And Stability Analyses For Microgrids With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ashishkumar Kanubhai Solanki
Virtual Droop Control Framework And Stability Analyses For Microgrids With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ashishkumar Kanubhai Solanki
Theses and Dissertations
Microgrids can provide the most promising means of integrating large amounts of distributed sources into the power grid and can supply reliable power to critical loads. However, managing distributed sources and loads within a microgrid during island and grid-tie modes and during transitions is a challenge. Stable operation of a microgrid is a concern specifically during the starting of motor loads, switching of large loads, and in presence of high penetration of renewable resources. Hence, a generalized control framework is required to regulate microgrid voltage and frequency, maintain power quality, manage Distributed Generations (DG) and ensure microgrid stability. Several control …
Lithium-Ion Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Integrated With A Variable Speed Wind Turbine For Improved Power Conversion Control, Goran Mandic
Lithium-Ion Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Integrated With A Variable Speed Wind Turbine For Improved Power Conversion Control, Goran Mandic
Theses and Dissertations
The energy of wind has been increasingly used for electric power generation worldwide due to its availability and ecologically sustainability. Utilization of wind energy in modern power systems creates many technical and economical challenges that need to be addressed for successful large scale wind energy integration. Variations in wind velocity result in variations of output power produced by wind turbines. Variable power output becomes a challenge as the amount of output power of the wind turbines integrated into power systems increases. Large power variations cause voltage and frequency deviations from nominal values that may lead to activation of relay protective …

Medical Grade High Frequncy Power Distribution Units, Ezana Mekonnen
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this thesis is to design, model, build, and test a series resonance converter that uses a high frequency isolation transformer, offering significant reduction in size and cost, for powering a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. The design increases the power quality for the load by isolating the grid side disturbances, and providing regulated desired voltage. The proposed architecture also allows for an optimized point of integration with an UPS, a regulated DC bus to improve waveform fidelity of x-ray generator, and active monitoring and control of the power architecture. Conventional CT systems use a 60Hz transformer, which not …
