Design Of Multiple Facts Controllers For Damping Inter-Area Oscillations: A Decentralized Control Approach, Arturo Roman Messina Jan 2004

Design Of Multiple Facts Controllers For Damping Inter-Area Oscillations: A Decentralized Control Approach, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

In this paper, a frequency-domain methodology based on decentralised control theory is proposed to co-ordinate multiple FACTS controllers as well as to minimise the potential for adverse interaction between control loops. First, the concept of dynamic loop interaction in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) control systems is introduced. Using the notion of a generalised dynamic relative gain in decentralised control systems, a method is then proposed to determine the best pairing of inputs and outputs for the design of MIMO systems. Finally, a residue-based method is adopted to tune system controllers. The design methodology is tested on a 6-area, 130-machine and 351- …

Damping Of Low-Frequency Interarea Oscillations Using Hvdc Modulation And Svc Voltage Support, Arturo Roman Messina Jan 2003

Damping Of Low-Frequency Interarea Oscillations Using Hvdc Modulation And Svc Voltage Support, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

This paper discusses the results of preliminary studies conducted to examine the applicability of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology and static Volt-Amp Reactive (VAR) compensation to aid damping of low-frequency interarea oscillations in the Mexican interconnected system (MIS). The study of interarea oscillations and the design of controls is done using modal analysis of a linearized AC/DC state space model of the power system at a particular operating point. The utilized methodology is tested on a planning model of the MIS that includes a proposed HVDC transmission system embedded in an AC network in which several SVCs are used for …

Normal Form Analysis Of Stressed Power Systems: Incorporation Of Svc Models, E Barocio, Arturo Roman Messina Jan 2003

Normal Form Analysis Of Stressed Power Systems: Incorporation Of Svc Models, E Barocio, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

In this paper a comprehensive analytical technique based on normal form theory and symbolic computer algebra is proposed for the analysis of non-linear inter-area oscillations in stressed power systems that incorporate the operation of Static VAR Compensators (SVCs). A second-order representation of the power system is derived that considers the explicit representation of synchronous machines and multiple SVCs in the state representation. On the basis of this model, normal form theory is used to study non-linear power system behaviour following large disturbances. The proposed approach is general and may be extended to include other FACTS devices. A simplified 4- machine, …

Use Of Energy And Power Concepts In The Analysis Of The Inter-Area Mode Phenomenon, Arturo Roman Messina Jan 2001

Use Of Energy And Power Concepts In The Analysis Of The Inter-Area Mode Phenomenon, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

This paper presents an energy-based small signal method of analyzing low-frequency inter-area oscillations. A comprehensive framework for the analysis of system oscillations is developed based on the analysis of energy relationships in the linear state representation of the power system. This approach provides insight into the nature of the inter-area phenomenon and can be used in conjunction with modern techniques for spectral analysis of complex power systems. The practical use of the proposed methodology is tested on a complex 46-machine, 190-bus test system. Detailed non-linear time domain simulations and frequency domain studies are finally conducted to check the validity of …

Analytical Investigation Of The Use Of Static Var Compensators To Aid Damping Of Inter-Area Oscillations, Arturo Roman Messina Jan 1999

Analytical Investigation Of The Use Of Static Var Compensators To Aid Damping Of Inter-Area Oscillations, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

A comprehensive investigation of the use of Static VAR Compensators (SVCs) to aid damping of low-frequency inter-area oscillations in large interconnected power systems is presented. The study of inter-area oscillations and the design of controls is done using modal analysis of a linearized model of the power system. Based on this model an efficient algorithm to compute the power oscillation flow for each mode of concern is developed. This approach allows to identify the nature of oscillation patterns and provides important information needed in the application of SVCs. Controllability and observability measures are then used to assess the impact of …

Exoerience With The Analysis Of Small Signal Stability In Longitudinal Power Systems: A Case Study With The Mexican Interconnected System, Arturo Roman Messina Jan 1995

Exoerience With The Analysis Of Small Signal Stability In Longitudinal Power Systems: A Case Study With The Mexican Interconnected System, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

In this paper a fundamental study of the small signal stability characteristics of a longitudinal system representing a major equivalent of the Mexican power system is presented. The special characteristics of the Mexican system are emphasized and a number of studies regarding the nature and sources of low frequency oscillations are discussed. These studies reveal the emergence of an undamped swing mode #tvolving the interaction of several machines and their controllers spread out over a large geographical area. The influence of system structure and loading, load effect and the
