A Study Of Two Dimensional Tapered Periodic Edge Treatments To Reduce Wideband Edge Diffraction, Russell A. Burleson
A Study Of Two Dimensional Tapered Periodic Edge Treatments To Reduce Wideband Edge Diffraction, Russell A. Burleson
Theses and Dissertations
This is a brief summary of a study to reduce diffraction from an infinite two dimensional edge using tapered periodic surfaces. The concept is to use the impedance characteristics of a periodic surface to create a tapered impedance much like a tapered resistance commonly used for diffraction reduction. This approach has several advantages over. tapered resistive treatments to include ease of fabrication, better engineering control of the impedance and negligible loss absorbed by the ta per. In this study, four periodic tapers were design, built and tested. These tapers were also modeled using a variety of numerical techniques. The results …
Analysis And Simulation Of A Gps Receiver Design Using Combined Delay-Lock And Modified Tanlock Loops, George D. Harris
Analysis And Simulation Of A Gps Receiver Design Using Combined Delay-Lock And Modified Tanlock Loops, George D. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the performance of two types of tracking loops used in Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The first loop, the Delay-Lock Loop (DLL), is responsible for maintaining synchronization with the received PN sequence. The second loop, the Modified Tanlock Loop (MTLL), is responsible for maintaining synchronization with the carrier signal. The performance of the two loops is investigated first separately then their performance is evaluated when operated together. This thesis is an investigation on the ability of these two loops to overcome corruption of the input signal due to noise. Expanding the dynamic …
Development Of A 4-Bit Parallel Analog-To-Digital Converter And A Four- Quadrant Double-Balanced Mixer Using Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Technology, Scott F. Jokerst
Development Of A 4-Bit Parallel Analog-To-Digital Converter And A Four- Quadrant Double-Balanced Mixer Using Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Technology, Scott F. Jokerst
Theses and Dissertations
A 4-bit parallel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a four- quadrant double-balanced mixer were designed and simulated using heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology to test the dc and high-frequency characteristics of HBTs. HSPICE simulations of small-scale components and the large-scale ADC operated within expected ranges. The ADC implemented with the Rockwell HBT model operated at a sampling rate of over 1 GHz, and the Fellows model also operated at a 1 GHz sampling rate. The mixer produced an intermediate frequency (IF) signal using radio frequency (RF) and local oscillator (LO) inputs. The circuit produced a +9 dB power gain with less …
System Design Analysis Of A Lightweight Laser Satellite Terminal, Brian C. Page
System Design Analysis Of A Lightweight Laser Satellite Terminal, Brian C. Page
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the technological feasibility of a man- portable satellite laser communications system. Areas of interest were an end- to-end system analysis on the communications link evaluation of atmospheric effects and evaluation of semi-conductor lasers as the laser source. A literature search revealed that satellite laser communication research is primarily directed at inter-satellite links. There have been some proposed systems for space-to-ground laser communications systems, but they all utilize large fixed ground stations. The focus of this research effort is directed at a small man-portable ground station capitalizing on recent advances in semiconductor laser devices. Baseline satellite communication systems …
Optical Wavelet Transform For Fingerprint Identification, Robert P. Macdonald
Optical Wavelet Transform For Fingerprint Identification, Robert P. Macdonald
Theses and Dissertations
The Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI has recently sanctioned a wavelet fingerprint image compression algorithm developed for reducing storage requirements of digitized fingerprints. This research implements an optical wavelet transform of a fingerprint image, as the first step in an optical fingerprint identification process. Wavelet filters are created from computer generated holograms of biorthogonal wavelets, the same wavelets implemented in the FBI algorithm. Using a detour phase holographic technique, a complex binary filter mask is created with both symmetry and linear phase. The wavelet transform is implemented with continuous shift using an optical correlation between binarized fingerprints written on a …
Investigation Of The Sensitivity, Selectivity, And Reversibility Of The Chemically-Sensitive Field-Effect Transistor (Chemfet) To Detect Nitrogen Dioxide, Dimethyl Methylphosphonate, And Boron Trifluoride, Neal T. Hauschild
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility of a chemically-sensitive field-effect transistor (CHEMFET) gas microsensor. Various physical operating parameters were tested to determine which produced the most significant sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility which were computed from response changes generated from electrical conductivity modulations when exposed to challenge gases. The variable operating parameters included: thinfilm material, film thickness, challenge gas specie, challenge gas concentration, and operating temperature. Copper phthalocyanine and lead phthalocyanine were used as thin films to detect the following challenge gases: nitrogen dioxide, dimethyl methylphosphonate, boron trifluoride, methanol, carbon monoxide, vinyl chloride, and trichloroethylene. Tests revealed that copper …
Comparison Of A Distributed Kalman Filter Versus A Centralized Kalman Filter With Fault Detection Considerations, Paul J. Lawrence Jr.
Comparison Of A Distributed Kalman Filter Versus A Centralized Kalman Filter With Fault Detection Considerations, Paul J. Lawrence Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This project examined the results obtained by simulating an aircraft navigation system with a partial complement of a typical avionics sensor array. Two different techniques of estimation processes were utilized and compared: the conventional Kalman and the federated filter architectures. Areas of interest include error state estimation accuracy and overall performance, residual behavior under normal and induced sensor failure conditions, and potential for failure detection and isolation. Several simulations were accomplished for each filter design and the results were compared in order to verify the validity of the newly developed federated filter architecture. Comparison of the error state estimation accuracies …
Phased Array Antenna Analysis Using Hybrid Finite Element Methods, Daniel T. Mcgrath
Phased Array Antenna Analysis Using Hybrid Finite Element Methods, Daniel T. Mcgrath
Theses and Dissertations
This research in computational electromagnetics developed a new method for predicting the near-field mutual coupling effects in phased array antennas, using the finite element method (FEM) in combination with integral equations. Accurate feed modeling is accomplished by enforcing continuity between the FEM solution and an arbitrary number of wave guide models across a ground plane aperture. A periodic integral equation is imposed above the antenna's physical structure in order to enforce the radiation condition and to confine the analysis to an array unit cell. The electric field is expanded in terms of vector finite elements, and Galerkin's method is used …
Self-Referenced Speckle Holography (Srsh) Image Reconstruction Performance, John R. Devey
Self-Referenced Speckle Holography (Srsh) Image Reconstruction Performance, John R. Devey
Theses and Dissertations
The Speckle Holography technique uses a series of short exposure images and associated wave front sensor measurements to reconstruct astronomical images. The reconstruction technique effectively boosts the amplitude of high spatial frequencies to allow for finer resolution of astronomical objects. A simulation package that calculates the optical transfer function (OTF) of a telescopic system was previously developed for the Phillips Laboratory. This software was modified slightly to provide the Speckle Holography system transfer function (STF) for a telescopic system under varying seeing conditions.
Frequency Domain Speech Compression Using The Karhunen-Loeve Transform, Donald W. Dryley
Frequency Domain Speech Compression Using The Karhunen-Loeve Transform, Donald W. Dryley
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was test the influence of phase on the quality of speech reproduced by a speaker dependent compression system. The tests consisted of compressing frequency domain speech vectors using the Karhunen-Loeve Transform, with and without phase, then making subjective judgements as to the reproduced quality. Error Metrics were then tested for their suitability as predictors of reproduced quality. The compression software transformed each speech vector into a vector of complex Fourier coefficients (only half of the coefficients are needed as transform is hermitian). Phase was preserved by using the real frequency components to form one vector …
