Abstract 1

Feasibility of Efficient Photovoltaics in Eastern Kentucky

Photovoltaics (PV-also called solar photovoltaic devices) are used to harness the power of the sun via the electronic process that occurs within semiconductor cells. The solar energy is absorbed by the cells, which causes the electrons to break away from their atoms, allowing them to flow within the material to produce electricity. This electricity will become the renewable energy for Kentucky, as the generation of coal will but come to a stop within the near future. Like Denmark who is running on 100% renewable generation we must stride to become fully …

Mechanical Design And Optimization Of An Interactive Animatronic Bald Eagle, Eric Burns Sep 2016

Mechanical Design And Optimization Of An Interactive Animatronic Bald Eagle, Eric Burns

Phi Kappa Phi Research Symposium (2012-2016)

Animatronics is a specialized sub-category of mechatronics, a fusion of mechanical and electrical engineering. The field has grown from small, individual projects into a major industry. As animatronics progress, mechanical engineers are pushed to design internal structures which occupy ever-decreasing spaces and to ensure designs can undergo maintenance and modifications smoothly. This research investigates methods of reducing space required for mechanisms and several other beneficial methods of development as well as varying satisfactions for audiences when exposed to actor-controlled systems rather than pre-scripted functions. The mechanical systems are designed using CAD software available at Georgia Southern. On-campus, resources are used …

Atomistic Configuration Interaction Simulation Tool For Semiconductor Based Quantum Computing Devices, Jingbo Wu, Archana Tankasala, Jim Fonseca, Rajib Rahman, Gerhard Klimeck Aug 2016

Atomistic Configuration Interaction Simulation Tool For Semiconductor Based Quantum Computing Devices, Jingbo Wu, Archana Tankasala, Jim Fonseca, Rajib Rahman, Gerhard Klimeck

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Solid-state devices are promising candidates for quantum computing applications due to obvious advantages in compatibility with semiconductor fabrication technologies and the extremely long coherent times of electron and nuclear spins in these devices. In such devices, electron interactions are crucial for single and two qubit gate operations. Thus it is essential to evaluate these electron-electron interactions accurately for precise qubit control. It is shown that Atomistic Configuration Interaction can be used to accurately determine electron-electron interactions in realistic semiconductor quantum computing devices. In this work, an online simulation tool on Atomistic Configuration Interaction has been implemented and published on nanoHUB.org, …

A Compact System For Photon Counting Based On Silicon Photomultiplier, Youngwoo Cho, Youngkee Jung, Euiwon Bae Aug 2016

A Compact System For Photon Counting Based On Silicon Photomultiplier, Youngwoo Cho, Youngkee Jung, Euiwon Bae

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

A compact and portable detection system is necessary to measure the amount of pollutant from environmental sample by detecting and quantifying the light emitted by bioluminescent reporters. This silicon photomultiplier based project is hoping to acquire even more accurate data at a far lower light level than previously developed smartphone based system. After pre-amplification and comparator, the signal is separated from the internal noise present in the overall circuit. Next, the microcontroller counts the number of pulses generated by the comparator in a set amount of time and transfers the data to the Bluetooth module for the smartphone to receive …

Life Alert System For Vulnerable Adults Who Live Alone, Bohyun Ahn Apr 2016

Life Alert System For Vulnerable Adults Who Live Alone, Bohyun Ahn

Undergraduate Research Symposium

As medical technology and the standard of living have improved, the number of vulnerable adults who live alone has increased. Asking for help themselves may be impossible if they have a medical or life issue. Some accidents may go unnoticed for individuals living alone. When accidents regarding vulnerable adults occur, it may take days or weeks to become known by family or neighbors. To solve this problem, a life alert system was designed for vulnerable adults in their homes. To demonstrate the system, A fusion of different sensors were set up in a booth to detect the user’s motion over …
