The total power losses in a distribution network are usually minimized through the adjustment of the output of a distributed generator (DG). In line with this objective, most researchers concentrate on the optimization technique in order to regulate the DG's output and compute its optimal size. In this article, a novel Rank Evolutionary Particle Swarm Optimization (REPSO) method is introduced. Finding optimal configuration of power distribution systems topology is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. It becomes more complex when time varying nature of loads in large-scale distribution systems is taken into account. In the second chapter of this dissertation, a systematic approach is proposed to tackle the computational burden of the procedure. As distributed generation resources penetrate into distribution systems, protection and service continuity are becoming major issues. A new approach for protection coordination and higher reliability of a distribution system with distributed generation is explored in this paper. The concept of central coordination relay (CCR) is developed for this purpose. After a brief introduction of the design and operating procedures of CCR, the utilization of the proposed relay on two feeders of a substation in the Kocaeli region of Turkey is simulated using DIgSILENT PowerFactory. Distributed Generation (DG) sources have become an integral part of modern decentralized power systems. However, the interconnection of DG systems to the power grid can present several operational challenges. One such major challenge is islanding detection. Islanding occurs when a DG system is disconnected from the rest of the power grid. Islanding can present serious safety hazards and therefore an accurate and fast islanding detection technique is mandated by DG interconnection standards such as IEEE 1547 and UL 1741. An Intelligence-Based Islanding Detection Method Using Dwt And Ann, Mehrdad Heidari, Ghodratollah Seifossadat, Morteza Razaz

In this paper, a new method based on artificial neural network (ANN) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is proposed for electrical islanding detection. Transient signals produced during an event are used in the proposed method. ANN is trained to classify the transient events as islanding and nonislanding. The required features for classifying are extracted through DWT of voltage and current transient signals. The proposed method is then simulated on a medium voltage distribution system of CIGRE with 2 kinds of DGs. Results show that this method can detect electrical islands more rapidly and accurately.
