Labview Based Whispering Gallery Mode Microtoroid Coupling Pid Controller, Peiyao Li Dec 2012

Labview Based Whispering Gallery Mode Microtoroid Coupling Pid Controller, Peiyao Li

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The aim of this thesis is to test the implementation of PID control algorithm for stabilization of coupling. Efficient and robust coupling is prerequisite in microcavity related applications. But surrounding environments, like temperature and airflow, could easily influence coupling condition. PID algorithm has been used for stabilization and control in industry for several decades. For this reason, the author decided to test further application, with the goal of proving the suitability for Whispering Gallery Mode coupling. The thesis first discusses the Whispering Gallery Mode microtoroid, especially its relative coupling regime. In a second stage, the LabVIEW and Arduino based real …

Mechanical Engineering

Amputations are a common occurrence in soldiers returning home who have suffered the effects of IED and munitions explosions. For upper limb amputees, trans-radial amputations are the most common. Traditional hook devices do not offer an adequate level of normalcy for users, prompting the use of myoelectric devices. While current myoelectric devices do offer a more natural experience, they come with a host of other problems that makes their adoption by service personnel not desirable or not permitted by the VA. PolyGrasp Reach seeks to reduce weight and cost and improve performance. This addresses several of the issues with devices …

Independent Moisture-Sensitive Automatic Watering System, Jessica Sherbon Jun 2012

Independent Moisture-Sensitive Automatic Watering System, Jessica Sherbon

Electrical Engineering

With the availability of home improvement supplies, plant owners can quickly and easily set up an automatic system that waters their gardens based on a specified schedule. However, most of these systems require an electric outlet or water faucet making them unusable in locations where installed water and power lines do not exist, such as apartment balconies. This project defines a small-scale automated watering system that runs independently of installed water and power lines. The system takes water from a reservoir, such as a tank or bucket, and supplies that water to individual plants via a drip system. The design …

Robot X, Alan Truong, Alex Haag Apr 2012

Robot X, Alan Truong, Alex Haag

Computer Engineering

The following report outlines the design decisions behind Robot X for the 2012 Cal Poly Roborodentia competition held annually during Open House. This investigation includes detailed overview of Robot X's sensory system, driving system, conveyor belt system, and can compartment system. In addition, basic hardware and software design are explored.
