Enhancements To The Modified Composite Pattern Method Of Structured Light 3d Capture, Charles Joseph Casey
Enhancements To The Modified Composite Pattern Method Of Structured Light 3d Capture, Charles Joseph Casey
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The use of structured light illumination techniques for three-dimensional data acquisition is, in many cases, limited to stationary subjects due to the multiple pattern projections needed for depth analysis. Traditional Composite Pattern (CP) multiplexing utilizes sinusoidal modulation of individual projection patterns to allow numerous patterns to be combined into a single image. However, due to demodulation artifacts, it is often difficult to accurately recover the subject surface contour information. On the other hand, if one were to project an image consisting of many thin, identical stripes onto the surface, one could, by isolating each stripe center, recreate a very accurate …
Improving Sli Performance In Optically Challenging Environments, Eric Dedrick
Improving Sli Performance In Optically Challenging Environments, Eric Dedrick
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The construction of 3D models of real-world scenes using non-contact methods is an important problem in computer vision. Some of the more successful methods belong to a class of techniques called structured light illumination (SLI). While SLI methods are generally very successful, there are cases where their performance is poor. Examples include scenes with a high dynamic range in albedo or scenes with strong interreflections. These scenes are referred to as optically challenging environments.
The work in this dissertation is aimed at improving SLI performance in optically challenging environments. A new method of high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) based on …
The Application Of Discontinuous Galkerin Finite Element Time-Domain Method In The Design, Simulation And Analysis Of Modern Radio Frequency Systems, Bo Zhao
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The discontinuous Galerkin finite element time-domain (DGFETD) method has been successfully applied to the solution of the coupled curl Maxwell’s equations. In this dissertation, important extensions to the DGFETD method are provided, including the ability to model lumped circuit elements and the ability to model thin-wire structures within a discrete DGFETD solution. To this end, a hybrid DGFETD/SPICE formulation is proposed for high-frequency circuit simulation, and a hybrid DGFETD/Thin-wire formulation is proposed for modeling thin-wire structures within a three-dimensional problem space. To aid in the efficient modeling of open-region structures, a Complex Frequency Shifted-Perfectly Matched Layer (CFS-PML) absorbing medium is …
New Accurate Fault Location Algorithm For Parallel Transmission Lines, Pramote Chaiwan
New Accurate Fault Location Algorithm For Parallel Transmission Lines, Pramote Chaiwan
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Electric power systems have been in existence for over a century. Electric power transmission line systems play an important role in carrying electrical power to customers everywhere. The number of transmission lines in power systems is increasing as global demand for power has increased. Parallel transmission lines are widely used in the modern transmission system for higher reliability. The parallel lines method has economic and environmental advantages over single circuit. A fault that occurs on a power transmission line will cause long outage time if the fault location is not located as quickly as possible. The faster the fault location …
Resource Allocation And Efficient Routing In Wireless Networks, Jianjun Yang
Resource Allocation And Efficient Routing In Wireless Networks, Jianjun Yang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In wireless networks, devices (nodes) are connected by wireless links. An important issue is to set up high quality (high bandwidth) and efficient routing paths when one node wants to send packets to other nodes. Resource allocation is the foundation to guarantee high quality connections. In addition, it is critical to handle void areas in order to set up detour-free paths. Moreover, fast message broadcasting is essential in mobile wireless networks. Thus, my research includes dynamic channel allocation in wireless mesh networks, geographic routing in Ad Hoc networks, and message broadcasting in vehicular networks.
The quality of connections in a …
Fabrication And Study Of Molecular Devices And Photovoltaic Devices By Metal/Dielectric/Metal Structures, Bing Hu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
A new class of electrodes with nanometer-scale contact spacing can be produced at the edge of patterned metal/insulator/metal this film structures. A key challenge is to produce insulator layers with low leakage current and have pristine metal contacts for controlled molecular contacts. Atomic layer deposition of high quality Al2O3 thin films onto Au electrodes was enabled by surface modification with a self-assembled monolayer of -OH groups that react with a monolayer of trimethylaluminum gas source. Ar ion milling was then used to expose the edge of the Au/dielectric/Au structure for molecular electrode contacts. The junctions are characterized …
Real-Time 3-D Reconstruction By Means Of Structured Light Illumination, Kai Liu
Real-Time 3-D Reconstruction By Means Of Structured Light Illumination, Kai Liu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Structured light illumination (SLI) is the process of projecting a series of light striped patterns such that, when viewed at an angle, a digital camera can reconstruct a 3-D model of a target object's surface. But by relying on a series of time multiplexed patterns, SLI is not typically associated with video applications. For this purpose of acquiring 3-D video, a common SLI technique is to drive the projector/camera pair at very high frame rates such that any object's motion is small over the pattern set. But at these high frame rates, the speed at which the incoming video can …

Extraction And Prediction Of System Properties Using Variable-N-Gram Modeling And Compressive Hashing, Muthulakshmi Muthukumarasamy
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In modern computer systems, memory accesses and power management are the two major performance limiting factors. Accesses to main memory are very slow when compared to operations within a processor chip. Hardware write buffers, caches, out-of-order execution, and prefetch logic, are commonly used to reduce the time spent waiting for main memory accesses. Compiler loop interchange and data layout transformations also can help. Unfortunately, large data structures often have access patterns for which none of the standard approaches are useful. Using smaller data structures can significantly improve performance by allowing the data to reside in higher levels of the memory …
Real-Time Model Predictive Control Of Quasi-Keyhole Pipe Welding, Kun Qian
Real-Time Model Predictive Control Of Quasi-Keyhole Pipe Welding, Kun Qian
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Quasi-keyhole, including plasma keyhole and double-sided welding, is a novel approach proposed to operate the keyhole arc welding process. It can result in a high quality weld, but also raise higher demand of the operator. A computer control system to detect the keyhole and control the arc current can improve the performance of the welding process. To this effect, developing automatic pipe welding, instead of manual welding, is a hot research topic in the welding field.
The objective of this research is to design an automatic quasi-keyhole pipe welding system that can monitor the keyhole and control its establishment time …
Near-Field Radiative Transfer: Thermal Radiation, Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation And Optical Characterization, Mathieu Francoeur
Near-Field Radiative Transfer: Thermal Radiation, Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation And Optical Characterization, Mathieu Francoeur
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on near-field radiative transfer, which can be defined as the discipline concerned with energy transfer via electromagnetic waves at sub-wavelength distances. Three specific subjects related to this discipline are investigated, namely nearfield thermal radiation, nanoscale-gap thermophotovoltaic (nano-TPV) power generation and optical characterization. An algorithm for the solution of near-field thermal radiation problems in one-dimensional layered media is developed, and several tests are performed showing the accuracy, consistency and versatility of the procedure. The possibility of tuning near-field radiative heat transfer via thin films supporting surface phononpolaritons (SPhPs) in the infrared is afterwards investigated via the computation of …

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Photovoltaic devices are receiving growing interest in both industry and research institutions due to the great demand for clean and renewable energy. Among all types of solar cells, cadmium sulfide (CdS) – cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) - copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2 or CIS) heterojunctions based thin film solar cells are of great interest due to their high efficiency and low cost. Further improvement in power conversion efficiency over the traditional device structure can be achieved by tuning the optical and electric properties of the light absorption layer as well as the window layer, utilizing nano template-assisted …
Micro-Fabricated Hydrogen Sensors Operating At Elevated Temperatures, Chi Lu
Micro-Fabricated Hydrogen Sensors Operating At Elevated Temperatures, Chi Lu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, three types of microfabricated solid-state sensors had been designed and developed on silicon wafers, aiming to detect hydrogen gas at elevated temperatures. Based on the material properties and sensing mechanisms, they were operated at 140°C, 500°C, and 300°C. The MOS-capacitor device working at 140°C utilized nickel instead of the widely-used expensive palladium, and the performance remained excellent. For very-high temperature sensing (500°C), the conductivity of the thermally oxidized TiO2 thin film based on the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate changed 25 times in response to 5 ppm H2 and the response transient times were just …
Phonon-Energy-Coupling-Enhancement Effect And Its Applications, Pang-Leen Ong
Phonon-Energy-Coupling-Enhancement Effect And Its Applications, Pang-Leen Ong
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Silicon Oxide/Oxynitride (SiO2/SiON) has been the mainstream material used for gate dielectric for MOS transistors for the past 30 years. The aggressive scaling of the feature size of MOS transistor has limited the ability of SiO2/SiON to work effectively as the gate dielectric to modulate the conduction of current of MOS transistors due to excess leakage current dominated by direct quantum tunneling. Due to this constraint, alternative gate dielectric/high-k is being employed to reduce the leakage current in order to maintain the rate of scaling of MOS transistors. However, the cost involved in the implementation of …
Modular Fast Direct Analysis Using Non-Radiating Local-Global Solution Modes, Xin Xu
Modular Fast Direct Analysis Using Non-Radiating Local-Global Solution Modes, Xin Xu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a modular fast direct (MFD) analysis method for a class of problems involving a large fixed platform region and a smaller, variable design region. A modular solution algorithm is obtained by first decomposing the problem geometry into platform and design regions. The two regions are effectively detached from one another using basic equivalence concepts. Equivalence principles allow the total system model to be constructed in terms of independent interaction modules associated with the platform and design regions. These modules include interactions with the equivalent surface that bounds the design region. This dissertation discusses how to analyze (fill …

Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Priority-Driven Scheduled Distributed Real-Time Systems, Chenxing Wang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Energy consumption is increasingly affecting battery life and cooling for real- time systems. Dynamic Voltage and frequency Scaling (DVS) has been shown to substantially reduce the energy consumption of uniprocessor real-time systems. It is worthwhile to extend the efficient DVS scheduling algorithms to distributed system with dependent tasks. The dissertation describes how to extend several effective uniprocessor DVS schedul- ing algorithms to distributed system with dependent task set. Task assignment and deadline assignment heuristics are proposed and compared with existing heuristics concerning energy-conserving performance. An admission test and a deadline com- putation algorithm are presented in the dissertation for dynamic …
Optimal Phase Measuring Profilometry Techniques For Static And Dynamic 3d Data Acquisition, Veeraganesh Yalla
Optimal Phase Measuring Profilometry Techniques For Static And Dynamic 3d Data Acquisition, Veeraganesh Yalla
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Phase measuring Profilometry (PMP) is an important technique used in 3D data acquisition. Many variations of the PMP technique exist in the research world. The technique involves projecting phase shifted versions of sinusoidal patterns with known frequency. The 3D information is obtained from the amount of phase deviation that the target object introduces in the captured patterns. Using patterns based on single frequency result in projecting a large number of patterns necessary to achieve minimal reconstruction errors. By using more than one frequency, that is multi-frequency, the error is reduced with the same number of total patterns projected as in …
