Impact-Based Analytics Of Cascaded False Data Injection Attacks On Smart Grids, Mohamadsaleh Jafari Dec 2021

Impact-Based Analytics Of Cascaded False Data Injection Attacks On Smart Grids, Mohamadsaleh Jafari

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The composition of communication lines and bidirectional smart devices in smart grids makes them greatly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. False data injection attacks (FDIAs) are of the most widespread cyber-attacks severely affecting the performance of smart grids that need to be analyzed. In this context, we analyze the feasibility of launching FDIAs in power systems with high renewables leading to false relay operations (FRO). By modeling the frequency dynamics of power systems, formalizing the FRO attack as a constraint satisfaction problem, our case studies show that power grids with renewables are more susceptible to FRO attacks. Moreover, the results suggest that …

Secure Control And Operation Of Energy Cyber-Physical Systems Through Intelligent Agents, Mohamad El Hariri Nov 2018

Secure Control And Operation Of Energy Cyber-Physical Systems Through Intelligent Agents, Mohamad El Hariri

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The operation of the smart grid is expected to be heavily reliant on microprocessor-based control. Thus, there is a strong need for interoperability standards to address the heterogeneous nature of the data in the smart grid. In this research, we analyzed in detail the security threats of the Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) and Sampled Measured Values (SMV) protocol mappings of the IEC 61850 data modeling standard, which is the most widely industry-accepted standard for power system automation and control. We found that there is a strong need for security solutions that are capable of defending the grid against …

Wide-Area Time-Synchronized Closed-Loop Control Of Power Systems And Decentralized Active Distribution Networks, Mehmet Hazar Cintuglu Nov 2016

Wide-Area Time-Synchronized Closed-Loop Control Of Power Systems And Decentralized Active Distribution Networks, Mehmet Hazar Cintuglu

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rapidly expanding power system grid infrastructure and the need to reduce the occurrence of major blackouts and prevention or hardening of systems against cyber-attacks, have led to increased interest in the improved resilience of the electrical grid. Distributed and decentralized control have been widely applied to computer science research. However, for power system applications, the real-time application of decentralized and distributed control algorithms introduce several challenges. In this dissertation, new algorithms and methods for decentralized control, protection and energy management of Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) and the Active Distribution Network (ADN) are developed to improve the …

Development Of Hardware In The Loop Real-Time Control Techniques For Hybrid Power Systems Involving Distributed Demands And Sustainable Energy Sources, Ali Mazloomzadeh Nov 2014

Development Of Hardware In The Loop Real-Time Control Techniques For Hybrid Power Systems Involving Distributed Demands And Sustainable Energy Sources, Ali Mazloomzadeh

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The future power grid will effectively utilize renewable energy resources and distributed generation to respond to energy demand while incorporating information technology and communication infrastructure for their optimum operation. This dissertation contributes to the development of real-time techniques, for wide-area monitoring and secure real-time control and operation of hybrid power systems.

To handle the increased level of real-time data exchange, this dissertation develops a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that is equipped with a state estimation scheme from the real-time data. This system is verified on a specially developed laboratory-based test bed facility, as a hardware and software …
