Least-Squares Approximate Solution Of Overdetermined Sylvester Equations, A. Scottedward Hodel, Pradeep Misra

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

We address the problem of computing a low-rank estimate Y of the solution X of the Lyapunov equation AX + XA' + Q = O without computing the matrix X itself. This problem has applications in both the reduced-order modeling and the control of large dimensional systems as well as in a hybrid algorithm for the rapid numerical solution of the Lyapunov equation via the alternating direction implicit method. While no known methods for low-rank approximate solution provide the two-norm optimal rank k estimate Xk of the exact solution X of the Lyapunov equation, our iterative algorithms provide an effective …

Polarization Properties Of Corner-Cube Retroreflectors: Theory And Experiment, Jian Liu, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Polarization properties of the corner-cube retroreflector are discussed theoretically by use of ray tracing and analytical geometry. The Jones matrices and eigenpolarizations of the six propagation trips of the corner-cube retroreflector are derived. An experiment is also set up for the determination of the linear eigenpolarizations and the output states of polarization for incident linearly polarized light. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical expectations.

The Sol Of New Orleans: An Undergraduate Design Experience, Edit J. Kaminsky, Brian L. Hardouin Jan 1997

The Sol Of New Orleans: An Undergraduate Design Experience, Edit J. Kaminsky, Brian L. Hardouin

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the incorporation of the design, construction, and testing of a solar-powered car into the undergraduate curriculum of the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of New Orleans. All work on the vehicle is entirely performed by students who earn design credits in our Senior EE Design Project and/or Special Problems in EE courses.
