Cardio Trainer, Levi Rash, Cristian Rodriguez Jun 2023

Cardio Trainer, Levi Rash, Cristian Rodriguez

Electrical Engineering

The Cardio Trainer Device is a wearable device that guides the user through a physical exercise based on the user’s heartbeat measurements. Users interface with the device via a wearable band. The band determines the heartbeat of the user in real time and, using that reading, gives the user verbal instructions to optimize their workout. These verbal instructions then serve to control the physical exertion of the user and are delivered through an audio device. Users input personal physical metrics to the Cardio Trainer Device that tailor the performance of the device in a manner of ways: rate of instruction, …

Tilt-Rotor Drone, Benjamin Stone, Zachary Crandall Jun 2016

Tilt-Rotor Drone, Benjamin Stone, Zachary Crandall

Electrical Engineering

A drone is defined a "an unmanned aircraft that can fly autonomously[2]." In the year 2016, there exist many applications for small scale drones. Drones, having had primarily military applications, now have use in hobby robotics, photography, and even in surveying. But drones have not yet been perfected and still have room for much improvement. Several problems with drones come in the form of battery life, stability, and size. Large drones can fit many sensors and probes, but are heavy and have less flight time. For autonomous drones, stability can be an issue even though there exist many stable drones. …

Fluid Midi Ribbon Guitar, Noah Baker Jun 2015

Fluid Midi Ribbon Guitar, Noah Baker

Electrical Engineering

This project was developed to create a new electronic instrument based off of a guitar. The design will give the user more chord combinations than are available on a typical guitar, the ability to retune each “string”, and customizable MIDI controller outputs, while trying to retain a similar playing style. The initial design for this project included implementing an onboard synthesizer (analog or digital). This idea was scrapped for time and cost considerations and replaced with MIDI output which will yield user customizable sound through virtual instruments, such as Massive.

Alternative Wheelchair Control System, Jessica Hendricks, Tara Keigharn Jun 2013

Alternative Wheelchair Control System, Jessica Hendricks, Tara Keigharn

Electrical Engineering

We geared this project towards assisting an individual with limited[1] motor function to operate a wheelchair. The product targets individuals who find use of a joystick is ineffective or painful. We focused our design on the wheelchair bought from Adaptive Driving Systems (Driving, 2013); but ultimately we would like to field a final product capable of applying to any electric wheelchair. Our goal: a person to operate the electric wheelchair using sensors that transmit a translation of an individual’s hand movement through a wireless transmission to a microcontroller installed on the wheel chair that then controls the wheelchair’s movement. …

Universal-Retro Console Gamepads To Usb Adapter With Two-Player Compatibility, Miguel Buenrostro Jun 2013

Universal-Retro Console Gamepads To Usb Adapter With Two-Player Compatibility, Miguel Buenrostro

Electrical Engineering

An Arduino board or microcontroller development board with a microprocessor can be configured to interface with a variety of wired gaming input devices. Through software and hardware design this functionality is accomplished for the use of older gaming system gamepad devices such as the original Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis. The Arduino development board offers up to 18 general purpose input output connections which are sufficient for the simultaneous connection of up to 6 gaming devices of the aforementioned gamepads. The microcontroller‘s firmware is changed to achieved plug-and-play compatibility so windows can recognize the device as …

Airport Runway Heating System, Greg Wang, Curtis Reedy Jun 2013

Airport Runway Heating System, Greg Wang, Curtis Reedy

Electrical Engineering

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, flight delays cost airlines $22 billion annually (Rapajic 16). Snow and ice buildup on the tarmacs are a major contributor to these delays in regions where freezing weather conditions are common. Current solutions such as anti-freeze chemicals and snowplows are ineffective and costly. Implementing a radiant heating system, specifically pipes running hot liquid within or below the runways, can help maintain the surface above freezing temperatures. Such a system has yet to be installed in a functioning airport because of its complexity and high cost. However, the FAA provides funding for infrastructure improvements, and …

Independent Moisture-Sensitive Automatic Watering System, Jessica Sherbon Jun 2012

Independent Moisture-Sensitive Automatic Watering System, Jessica Sherbon

Electrical Engineering

With the availability of home improvement supplies, plant owners can quickly and easily set up an automatic system that waters their gardens based on a specified schedule. However, most of these systems require an electric outlet or water faucet making them unusable in locations where installed water and power lines do not exist, such as apartment balconies. This project defines a small-scale automated watering system that runs independently of installed water and power lines. The system takes water from a reservoir, such as a tank or bucket, and supplies that water to individual plants via a drip system. The design …
