Traditional printing technologies and conductive/functional inks have been integrated to print electronic devices and circuits on really think, lightweight and flexible materials in a time and cost-effective manner. Printing is an additive manufacturing technology, which selectively deposits materials only where needed to produce a wide range of devices including sensors, smart packaging, solar panels, batteries, light sources and wearable electronics. Facial recognition is still a challenge in many applications, particularly in surveillance, security systems, and human-computer interactive (HCI) tools. The impact of real-world environmental variations on the performance of any facial recognition system can be significant. These variations may include illumination, facial expressions, poses, disguises (facial hair, glasses or cosmetics) and partial face occlusion. Materials having a wide band gap (above 2 eV) can provide new alternatives for existing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and other opto-electronic devices. Currently, many such devices are comprised of low-earth-abundant elements, such as gallium and indium, which are harmful to the environment to extract and difficult to recycle. Alternatively, MgSnN2 is an unexplored material comprised of earth abundant elements which benefit from a mature recycling infrastructure. AC rotating machines are exposed to fast front pulses when fed from inverters. This type of excitation produces dielectric stress in the machine’s insulation system that can result in premature deterioration or even failure.

In this dissertation, a non-uniform transmission line model to predict the transient voltage distribution in a machine coil under steep-fronted surge conditions is described and implemented. This model is a function not only of frequency but also of space to represent the variation of electrical parameters in the overhang and slot regions of the coil. With the idea of creating a product using flexible hybrid electronics, the group decided to create a musical keyboard like a synthesizer. This is implemented using a printing technique called screen printing. This allowed the group to make several copies of the same sensors with a consistent thickness, roughness, and size. These keys, made of silver, are used as capacitive proximity sensors. When another conductive material comes within range of the key to change the polled capacitance by 2.7 pF, the note corresponding with that key is outputted.

Our research has revealed that LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting uses less energy and is a more cost effective and environmentally responsible choice than incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Electric utility companies are interested in load profile (electricity consumption) data for expansion planning. Conventional methods of collecting the load profile data, such as surveys and metering, are tedious and time consuming activities. Cumbersome data collection processes also pose barriers. We present an innovative behavior model for generating electricity consumption load profiles. The model, based on fuzzy logic and activity graphs, requires minimum consumer data and can be easily updated to adapt to changes in technology. We demonstrate the accuracy of our model against real world data.
