To achieve the goal of a carbon pollution-free electricity sector by 2035 proposed by Biden’s Administration, the U.S. power grids are expecting a dramatic transformation in the resource mix of electricity generation. Accurate load modeling is key to depicting realistic system behavior in power system simulations. In the past, the use of static load models resulted in overly optimistic results, which led to unforeseen outages and issues following faults. One common cause of these types of unforeseen issues is Fault Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery (FIDVR). FIDVR occurs due to the stalling of single-phase residential air conditioners (A/C), and causes the voltage recovery after a fault to be slow. Improvements in load models over time have resulted in the capability of modeling load dynamics, and therefore better FIDVR.

To allow for high penetration of distributed generation and alternative energy units, it is critical to minimize the complexity of generator controls and to minimize the need for close coordination across regions. We propose that existing controls be replaced by a two-tier structure of local control operating within a global context of situational awareness. Disturbance analysis is essential to the study of the power transmission systems. Traditionally, disturbances are described as megawatt (MW) events, but the access to data is inefficient due to the slow installation and authorization process of the monitoring device. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to disturbance analysis conducted at the distribution level by exploiting the frequency recordings from Frequency Disturbance Recorders (FDRs) of the Frequency Monitoring Network (FNET/GridEye), based on the relationship between frequency change and the power loss of disturbances - linearly associated by the Frequency Response.
